DC or Marvel Animated Movies

Anyone watch any of the DC or Marvel animated movies? Which ones did you like? Which ones didn't you like? Who do you think is doing a better job on the animated movie front?

As for me, I think I've seen just about all of them now except for All Star Superman. Ultimate Avengers, Hulk Vs. (especially Hulk vs. Thor), and Superman/Batman Apocalypse are probably my favorites. I think Marvel came out strong a few years back but has kind of slowed down. DC on the other hand seems to be getting better and better with each one.

Watch batman under the Red hood that's been the best one for me of late

Crazy Jetty 03-09-2011 10:22 PM

I've not seen all that many. But my favorite one... I think the best written one was Batman: Under the Red Hood for DC, and Doctor Strange for Marvel.
I've not seen the Superman/Shazam, or Superman Allstar, though.

Justice League: New Frontiers deserves epic props, though, and was my fav, until Red Hood, which I thought was just really well written, and genuinely emotional (Even though I wished it had ended with Tim Drake making a cameo)

Green Lantern: First Flight *would* have been the best one had they split the story up into two, or three movies. They tried to cram like, three stories into a movie that was slightly longer than an hour. Other than trying to do too much, I thought it was really good.

behindthemask 03-09-2011 10:32 PM

I enjoyed the Hulk vs wolverine, Hulk vs thor movies, *Hulk smash little yellow man! haha love that.. I enjoyed the Invincible Iron man, The young avengers movie, I enjoyed the avengers 1, there was also some Batman Begins type animated movie that had a japanese style to it and had 4-5 mini batman stories that was an awesome movie.. trying to google the title but no luck.. I haven't seen much of the DC stuff but it looks good, and I seen on fanboy x-men is getting a anime version released soon...

trebleshot 03-10-2011 06:50 AM

The last animated comic movie I watched was Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (which is good, especially if you liked B:TAS). But it kind of shows how far behind I am on these things. I've been planning on seeing some of them through Netflix (if available), but never get around to it.

jimster2010 03-10-2011 08:20 AM

I think as far as being a decent coeherent representation of the comic book story from the animated is based on, I would have to give it to DC.

ludovicotek 03-10-2011 09:16 AM

I really enjoyed the Hulk Vs and World War Hulk movies from Marvel. The Ultimate Avengers and Dr. Strange were alright for me. I think that the DC movie tend to have better production quality. Under the Red Hood is great!

Batman Gotham Knight is the title, and yes, it was good.

Xcaliber037 03-10-2011 10:55 AM

Deadpool really made Hulk vs Wolverine. If/after they make the movie with Renolds they need to make an animated movie with Deadpool. I really enjoyed Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.

DrewBlank 03-10-2011 11:01 AM

I've seen all of them so far except All-Star Superman and Next Avengers. The DC movies have been good and continually get better. The Marvel movies are watchable. They both tend to blunt storylines to make them kid friendly or for licensing considerations, and I'm always thinking, "This could be better if they had just added this or left this in." Like Beta Ray Bill in the Planet Hulk? It worked, but wasn't nearly as fun as the Silver Surfer with his surfboard shield.

However, my kids can't sit through a DC movie without wandering off, and they watch the Marvel DVDs religiously. They watch Ultimate Avengers and Hulk vs. almost as much as they watch Cars or Toy Story. I really shouldn't let them, but my daughter is so cute afterward when she asks me, "Can I borrow a Deadpool and a Hulk?"

LOL. My two year old daughter is the same. I laugh and my wife cringes every time she asks "Watch Flash and Green Lantern? (JLU)" or "Hulk smash Thor?" Bringing 'em up right, yes sir.

Snowflakian 03-10-2011 12:24 PM

I've seen them all so far.

Personally my favorites are Planet Hulk, Hulk vs Wolverine, Dr. Strange and batman under the red hood.

The rest have been pretty good, but each have something that bugs me a little.
For All Star Superman, it's the high gravity accelerates time finale they do... (Comic book science, yes I know, but real science says high gravity slows time.)

I can't really pick one as marvel vs DC. They are about equal honestly. I may change my tune come emerald knights though.

Greenskar 03-10-2011 01:23 PM

I'm glad this thread has been started, since I've been having these same discussions with a bunch of my friends lately.

Comic book wise, I definitely gravitate toward Marvel and their books make up the vast majority of my comic library. Their universe, stories and characters just happen to be far more appealing to me vs the three characters that actually interest me in DC (Batman, Superman and occasionally Wonder Woman).

The animated movies, however, have the complete opposite effect. I've watched every Marvel Anime I can get my hands on and yet...the one truth remains. DC does their fight scenes BETTER! Hands down. I don't know why this is, but show me a Marvel Movie that does fight scenes longer or better than Superman/Batman Apocalypse, Wonder Woman or Under the Red Hood, and if you say Planet Hulk or even Hulk vs, I will gladly disagree. The stories, IMO, have been on par with each other.

Dr. Strange and Iron Man were great animated representations of their origin stories, I thought. Hulk vs. series was about the equivalent to the Superman/Shazaam movie with the exception that I think Hulk gets the edge simply because Deadpool was in it...and therefore makes me biased :p

Planet Hulk and Superman/Batman (the first one, without Supergirl) both failed me in terms of key story elements that I loved so much in the books: Silver Savage fight and Captain Atom taking the ship himself instead of the movie having Batman do it. However, I appreciated the effort taken to bring these representations to the screen.

Under the Red Hood is still my favorite of the DC and Marvel Animated movies so far. The worst movie I've seen so far is the recent All Star Superman. I hated the story (never read the comic) and this version of Superman and Lois Lane, although I loved Lex Luthor. The pacing seemed all wrong and there were several different events in the movie taking place that I felt were irrelevant to the main storyline and just didn't make any sense to me. It was the first Animated comic movie that I wanted to return, except my roommate bought it.

Xcaliber037 03-10-2011 02:38 PM

I wonder how much better or worse Disney is going to make marvel stories? Gotta give it them for great scripts. But what are they going to do with characters like Deadpool and Punisher? And for kids: superhero squad is the best! It's downright hilarious!

jamesmruddy 03-10-2011 02:49 PM

By far my favorite has been Next Avengers. It was one that I really was hoping and wishing that could get picked up and turned into a series.

behindthemask 03-12-2011 12:04 AM

just to add to the mix,... here's a clip of the new thor vs loki 4 part mini series offered to ps3,xbox and itunes $2.99 an episode, or 12 basically to own it. looks amazing.

MegaPrime33 03-12-2011 06:38 AM

I've watched most and I've enjoyed most. The only thing I didn't really care for was Gotham Knights. Which sucks because it's one of the rare ones with Conroy.

MasterSock 03-12-2011 10:19 AM

Planet Hulk was awesome!

snake5289 03-12-2011 11:03 AM

I think DC is doing better in the movie department but Marvel has had some good ones. The upcoming GL: Emerald Knights movie looks really good.

Favs:
DC- GL: First Flight, Batman: Under the Red Hood, and DC Showcase: The Spectre
Marvel- Hulk Vs. and Ultimate Avengers

And as a bonus
Animated Movies I'd like to see- Ghost Rider, Daredevil, The Flash, and Nightwing.

Snowflakian 03-12-2011 12:09 PM

I tend to factor only on entertainment value per each. So my votes tend to stick to coherence of story, and believability of said story.

I can't factor action into it, as if it came to that, only 2 things would stay afloat and neither of which were movies.

The X-23 X-Men evolution episode, and the JLU season 2 and season 3 finales.
Otherwise I've been spoiled by Monty Oum with Dead Fantasy and Haloid, and everything that doesn't do as much depth as he did to the action feels subpar to me.

So that being said, my choices are limited to just how well executed they are in the characters they deal with or persistance of annoying catch phrases (Hello megan! -_- ). So far, both have done marginally well with that on equal terms. DC seems to really be pumping them out left and right, but they do have the more misses because of that. Things like Superman Doomsday being based on the novel instead of comic, Brainiac attacks with how juvenile it is (reminiscent of Ironman season 1 juvenile, not even SHS par juvenile) just to name a few.

I guess I gotta go with Marvel then as I can't really think of any pure misses they've done in comparison, but they also have fewer on the market to compare in that respect. This is only going on the STV movies though.

If we start factoring in series(short and longform), motion comics, and the movies, then the judging gets more varied.

brianregan09 03-12-2011 01:52 PM

Yeah i loved the Planet Hulk one but my favourite was Hulk vs Wolverine if only it had been a bit longer it would have been amazing, The Dr. Strange one was pretty cool too as was the 2nd Ultimate Avengers, for DC i haven't seen many but Superman Doomsday and Justice League stand out for me

jerrylewis 05-05-2011 05:29 AM

I don't like to watch animated movie.i have watched only three animated movies.Planet Hulk was awesome.Rio is also a good movie.

trebleshot 05-05-2011 12:49 PM

While that may be, Rio is not a DC or Marvel animated movie, as the title of the thread states.

Shin Densetsu 05-05-2011 09:15 PM

I heard Marvel is stepping up. I haven't actively watched Marvel toons since the 90's, Fantastic 4/Iron Man hour were the last Marvel ones I was into.

DC is where it's at right now. Must see:
  • New Frontier
  • Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker
  • Mask Of The Phantasm
The Red Hood could've been a LOT better. First Flight was okay. The 1st Superman/Batman was just okay. Superman: Doomsday was okay.

FUBLU 08-27-2011 09:04 AM

So what's the deal.... Is MARVEL going to come up with anymore Animated movies after Thor? (Which was a load of BS by the way.)
You'd think with DISNEY on board things would change for the better with the animation department but, no news.... that I know of.
Someone fill me in.

And yes... DC is far superior to MARVEL when it come to animated movies...but, that's about it. lol
Make mine MARVEL!!!
