Toy Biz X Men Best Of Back In The Day

I think most of us here collected the toy biz X men line back in the 90's. It was one of my favorite toylines! Anyone remember how freaking hard tiger stripe wolverine was to find? I remember the X force expansions, getting Shatterstar for x mas, et al. Great memories. Few of mine have broken over time.

Remember the time Weapon X was released with that bad ass sculpt for claws? I remember Sabretooth I actually being pretty cool, loved Iceman too. Hated how towards the end, less articulation seemed to be the norm, with preference for highly styalized sculpts. My favorite figures were from the mid 90's.

So what are your favorites? Here are some of mine:
  • Wolverine II
  • Cyclops II
  • Sabretooth I
  • Space Cable
  • Forge
  • Magneto
  • Iceman II
  • Spy Wolverine
  • Weapon X
  • Water Wars Wolverine or whatever the hell one which looked like a Joe Maduereira version and came with a water gun

brianregan09 03-23-2011 03:11 PM

The light up Eyes Mr. Sinister was awesome cannot wait till they do an MU of him love the character, Loved the Sabretooth aswell that had the claw marks on his chest when you flicked a button on his back

redskull3 03-23-2011 03:11 PM

one of my favorite lines.. I still to this day remember how jealous I was of my good friend who snagged up a rouge figure before I could find her .. LOL

Mr. Sinister kicked ass! I think the light up feature stopped working on mine for some reason. The Sabretooth you mentioned was the 1st one.

simplar 03-23-2011 03:45 PM

I still have mine somewhere boxed up. my favorite back then was the X-force line up which included:
sunspot
rictor
shatterstar
cannoball (in purple, not pink)
warpath
cable (Xmen outfit)

redskull3 03-23-2011 04:03 PM

remember gambit's coat.. LOL.. it was like the worst material ever

Yes it was. That plastic was horrible. lol! But I loved that figure!

I remember when the line first came out. I was all over it. And when the second series came out I almost had a heart attack when I saw how many characters were available. Gambit, Banshee, Forge!!!!!! X-Force!!!!!!!!!!! That line was indeed great. It did kind of suck that by the time they released Beast I was already getting tired of the line. :( I still have some of those figures.

Towards the end they started to get significantly bigger too. And don't even get me started on the Generation X line. I was so pissed that the Jubilee figure towered over the other X-Men. What were they thinking?

DrewBlank 03-23-2011 09:30 PM

I could measure my toy collecting life by those figures. I had Forge and Wolverine repelling off my shelf for most of high school, and took Strong Guy and Guido to college. I didn't buy any more until after I flunked out of college and ToyFare came out about four years later. I met my wife in 1997 and had to stop hanging out in bars every night. The KB Toy Liquidator started clearing out the local warehouse and I pieced together everything except the Classic Lightups and a couple of the boxed sets for around $2 or $3 a figure. Then I gave them all away to younger relatives and started again with Spider-Man Classics and Marvel Legends when they came out.

Sauron, Deathbird and the Giant-Sized X-Men boxed set were probably the best.

Crazy Jetty 03-23-2011 09:49 PM

Mystique, Water Wars Storm, Ninja-something Wolverine (He had the individually sculpted bone claws, and wore karate garb), and Deathbird were among my favorites. Vs Capcom Rogue, too.

The only thing I didn't like towards the end, were the funky poses (Robot Fighter Jubilee was an awesomely sculpted figure, but her pose made her useless).

There were a fair few Cyclops figures who were epic wins because their sculpts made them look EXTREMELY constipated.
I don't know. I loved the pre-legends toys. Whether they were good or bad. Marvel Legends are superior in every way... but they just never had the same... personality as the pre-legend lines.

agentsands 03-23-2011 11:41 PM

Yeah, this is my favorite line during the 90s. I was VERY big fan of the 90s comics and animated series so I was so into this line. I remember going to my local toystore every weekend as a kid and buy 2-3 figures. My parents really spoiled me during those times. I had a lot of them kept in a big plastic bag.

Sometime later my dad moved them to the basement. When I searched for them again, a LOT of figures were already missing! My favorite figures that got lost were Cyclops, Rogue, ALL of my Wolverines, and a bunch of others that I don't want to recall because it breaks my heart! LOL. Among the ones that got left, I still have Cable, Deadpool, and Gambit (with his cheap plastic coat all tattered up). I sold the rest in my local toy collecting forum.

One of the figures, an Albert Wolverine (the cyborg one that gets its two arms pop up if you squeeze the legs), seems to be rare for a Wolverine collector here in our area. At least I'm glad to help his collection.

trebleshot 03-24-2011 06:00 AM

I remember being into them for a while at the beginning. But the later gimmicks and overly-stylized sculpts made me lose interest really quick (especially "feral?" Wolverine wearing a bandana).

redskull3 03-24-2011 07:31 AM

here guys, check out this site for classic pics of these figs

God, I had a crapload of these figures. Got rid of them a couple years ago to make room for other stuff, but the ones that stand out in my mind were:

Apocalypse II
Juggernaut (with light up hammer)
Holocaust/Nemesis
Blink (Age of Apocalypse)
X-Man
"Night Attack" Cable
Age of Apocalypse Magneto
Deadpool II
Bishop
Weapon X Wolverine

That's an interesting site, but it's incompleteness is a tad disheartening.

redskull3 03-24-2011 12:14 PM

Ya I noticed that after I posted it lol. Oh well

Agreed trebleshot, and that link redskull just posted all the more shows why I stopped collecting the line too. The over-styling to try and match with Mcfarlane wasn't working for me, and the reduction in articulation was irritating me too. I hate when figures are "pre-posed".

Best series for me will always be from the middle series, 2 onward, stopping at 96 or so. I liked the "neutral" stance figures with elbow and knee joints.

If only Battle Ravaged Wolverine had elbows! That would've been cool, I think the 10" version had them.

simplar 03-24-2011 03:44 PM

savage land angel was one of the hardest fig 2 find for me. and what's worse my little cousin (a three year old at the time)who came 2 visit my house with his mom while i was at school threw some of my figs out of my room's window to the street (lived in NYC @ the time) I could only get some of them back including angels but not his wings. kane 2, kruel (another fav) and polaris were MIA after that little terror was done that day.

on another note, the light up gambit had a much better coat and fig. specially the limited feet articulation. nightcrawler & psylocke were awesome 2 from that line.

Dude that sucks, sorry to hear! Man I remember in 92 ALWAYS looking for Tiger Stripe Wolverine and NEVER finding it! Just a bunch of Wolverine III's.

Shin Densetsu 03-24-2011 05:50 PM

Maybe I'm in the minority on this one but I LOVED the 1st Wolverine figure and his cycle. Mine broke because I played with them a lot and kept the bike going in mid air off of makeshift ramps. Very fun times, wish they survived.

GK Punk 04-08-2011 04:17 PM

I had to reference RTM to remember some of the ones I had, but it brought back a lot of good memories looking at them.

Magneto 1: Loved the magnet gimmick on him. One of my favorites of any toyline.

Wolverine 1: Classic brown and yellow color scheme (Classic to me anyway!) and love the retractable claws. He went with me every where as a kid.

Cyclops 1: Light up eyes, nuff said.

Mr Sinister: Light up parts again. I was apparently big on that as a child.

Gambit: One of my favorite characters thanks to the toon.

Rogue: See above.

Wolverine 3: Dug the costume a lot.

C'Hod of the Starjammers!
His articulation sucks (he can only do "the wave") but he's a perfect scale match for Marvel Universe (he's a giant tank) and looks great next to modern Havok- and when I get Gladiator, he'll go with those two!
Best of all, he's dirt cheap online...

Hey, this is my first post here- great site!

Hey, this is my first post here- great site!

I do the same with Warstar, Strong guy, and a handful of others that fit perfectly scale-wise.

Warlock was also one of my faves, but I never picked him up back then. He also fits in the scale.

I gotta agree though, I hated it when they started coming preposed and lacked decent articulation. Some of the worst offenders were in the robot fighters line and generation X line. They had perfect sculpts, awesome costumes, but such horrible articulation.

.

YES! I have warstar too! A great fig- one of the first metallic paintjobs I saw that looked great. Too bad "B'nee" sucks on that fig- I'm trying to customize one.
He'll look great with Gladiator.

I'm not a big Strong Guy fan, but I agree that he's "in scale"- who else ya think matches?
I've seen customizers take the Planet Hulk head and stick it onto a movie Hulk body to great effect- Hulk should be larger than the MU offerings.

Yeah, I use movie norton hulk to tower over others. I like him being bigger than red hulk and skaar too.

But for X-Men/X-Force Caliban and Nimrod aren't bad. Onslaught is dead perfect for first form, whereas you can use his form 2, or the BAF for form 2. The rest we had an old topic for this here ( Marvel Universe Supplements - Toy Discussion at Toyark.com ) Sorry, took forever to find that old topic.

Jason Abbadon 04-09-2011 07:01 AM

Awesome list you've compiled- Thanks!
Add to that the BAF Modok is perfect scale foe MU- the AIM Soldiers look perfect next to him!

Of course, the best fig ever is The watcher from Marvel Select- looks great next to Galactus!

I' making a custom Annihillius from an X-Men 2099 guy...er...some red winged dude (never read that title) and a FF Annihillius head with McFarlane dragon wings....

Damn! I cant find my camera's computer cable! I'll upload pics soom- promise!
