Thor line. My "tiny" rant.

So I am at wally world today and I go to the toys aisle, no captain america has been set yet plenty of MU on hand but nothing I want and ofcourse the Iron man and Thor lines flooding the pegs.

So i head over to the thor section, as I have done many times before always looking but never buying. I pick up the hammer strike thor and purchase him. I am sitting here now with him on my desk and I notice he is just a bit off.. and thus my tiny rant begins.

The thor line is full of missed oportunity. The thor figures are all way too short (as I discovered today) and there is no comic series. Why on earth we are flooded with iron man and iron man variants and iron man variants of variants but thor cannot get a comic series is beyond me. My first thoughts upon opening this figure are that he does a good job representing the movie thor, but he is WAY too tiny! The gimicky accessory is silly and unnecessary but will help with custom fodder later, so I'm glad to have the plastic I suppose.

The head sculpt and overall articulation of the figure is just fine, this is a good representation of CH from the silver screen. Paint apps are solid and the figure is cut much better than the captain america figures, there is really nothing about him that limits his movement or hinders poses.. and there are no decisions here that make me scratch my head such as lack of wrist/forearm articulation (im looking at you ultimate cap..).

I really just wanted to hop on the ark and vent a bit here. I also wanted to open the floodgates to discussion of disapointment with this line.. am I the only one? I honestly think if we the collectors were to get a bit vocal with Hasbro we could see some definite changes here. I have a hard time believing on their current course of action that hasbro is seeing much return on this line, even with kids. The fact that he wont be getting the same treatment as Iron man/Cap with the comic series and villains is a REAL letdown and a TOTAL misstep by Hasbro.

Final thoughts on this.. this line is a total meh. Also, WTB Ultimate Thor hasbro..

I shall call him.. mini me..

I totally see what your saying. I do agree. they have missed the mark a little. Most people (including me) have complained that they havent released an odin with his helmet. but hopefully we may still get one at some point.

I dont have a problem with the scale of thor when you compare him to other movie figures. look at the pic of him and iron man mark IV below, he is taller, so with tony in the iron man suit making him taller it would make thor around 6'5 or whatever he is meant to be. you are right, next to marvel legends he is on the smaller side but absolutely fine for movie figs i feel.

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/t.../CIMG00452.jpg

im not too bothered about a comic book series because there are a few comic thors and amora in MU, but yeh i would have liked to see comic pack sif and the warriors 3, even odin. MU should work on that.

yeh the silly accessories are pointless, its just to entice the kids to want them with things that shoot things. although i would never use accessories like that when i was a kid. it seems to be the standard thing when making kids toys.

i think they have reached the balance of making a great cool detailed figure that the adult collectors would like on the shelf, and will appeal to the kids for the useless weapons that arent even in the film.

any one remember the countless batman and robins and mr freezes there were from the 1997 movie?

just a little bit of trivia for you here. that thor figure you have bought there is a concept training suit he was going to wear in the film but they never shot any scenes with it. theres a similar suit if not the exact one if i rember correctly in the 'art of thor' book. i looked it it in a shop a while back.

Roufuss 05-19-2011 03:24 PM

They could have taken the cheap way out by just re-using some of the MU figures for the first wave of the comic series, like those released in the comic two packs, if it was a money issue. It also would have been a good idea to test the waters.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Enchantress, Loki and Absorbing Man getting single carded, and then throwing in regular Thor, Ultimates Thor and Beta Ray Bill or Thunderstrike to flesh out the wave.

sevens 05-19-2011 03:56 PM

Dude- Beta Ray Bill! Yes! The Thor line missed it's mark with me because I ONLY have comic based figures and never have bought a movie based one. I have every single 3 3/4'' Marvel comic figure (with the exception of some variants here or there) and if the Thor line would have produced, I would have bought those too. As it is, I think it's too late for the line to do a comic run otherwise we would have heard about it by now. It's really too bad- how awesome would a comic Volstagg be??

If I remember correctly, Hasbro said they would look into a Comic Series wave if the regular waves sold well.

It doesn't look like its selling that great, to be honest, so our chances are slim. Even if they do a comic series wave, it'll probably be at the end of line and impossible to find, so its a lose / lose situation.

stjuggernaut 05-19-2011 05:57 PM

yes beta ray bill in 3.75, that would be awesome. i have the marvel legends one and thats really cool. would love to see ultimate thor too, especially as they have already done ultimate iron man and cap

MasterSock 05-19-2011 06:01 PM

Thor isn't selling well at all in my area :( i keep seeing full pegs of them all over.

omega145 05-19-2011 07:16 PM

I agree and im only looking forward to Destroyer. The only figure I have from this line is the frost giant and I think thats a pretty cool figure. The rest IMO are pretty bad.

stjuggernaut 05-19-2011 08:17 PM

pretty bad?? i think the sword spike thor is one of the most detailed 3.75 figures ive ever seen. thors suit in the movie is incredibly intricate and they nailed it. the face could look a little more like him but other than that I think the figure is probably the best figure I have in that scale.

Ash from Carolina 05-19-2011 09:17 PM

Perhaps the Thor figures are short because the Frost Giants are pretty darn small for giants. You've got to have some way to make the giants look like more than just rather tall blue people.

But yea it is a darn shame that they haven't used the movie line as an excuse to give us a Beta Ray Bill figure.

Tiberius 05-19-2011 09:47 PM

Omg I would love Ultimate Thor...thinking about one makes me happy. Maybe one day. Maybe maybe maybe...

MasterSock 05-19-2011 09:59 PM

You know what guys. I'm fairly certain that we will get are selfs a ultimate Thor along with everything else we want, it just gonna take time.

LOL My brother just showed me that actually. Sadly I was really looking forward to having that figure...what a shame.

flipwilson 05-19-2011 11:57 PM

If we got a Beta Ray Bill, I'd officially poop a rainbow of joy.

Jmacq1 05-20-2011 04:48 AM

The Thor line is a little bit shorter than the MU line, but it looks to be in scale with Iron Man and Captain America's movie figures, so that doesn't bother me too much. I expect the average MU figure might actually start to get a little shorter (as Star Wars figures have in the last year or so) as a cost-saving measure by Hasbro (to use less plastic), though maybe the MU figures save costs by being "skinnier" than other figures.

Hasbro said a comic series for Thor is possible if the first waves do well. It's always hard to tell what qualifies as "well" for Hasbro because they talk about Iron Man 2 like it was a big success despite all the pegwarmers. I can understand why they didn't have one right out of the gate, though, as I'm betting retailers weren't going for it. Thor's more obscure than Iron Man or Captain America, and a lot of the comic-Thor figures might look kind of silly compared to other figures (being big and colorful in ways that other Marvel characters often aren't). We may have to settle for "Movie Warriors Three" to be our only representation in this scale...at least until Thor 2.

All in all neither line has blown me away this year.

omega145 05-20-2011 06:15 AM

What's so different between the other Thor figures and the Heimdall figure? I personally think he looks cool and I might consider getting him even though I dont like any of the other Thor figures.

Single-joint knees, no wrist articulation, hinge elbows (no swivel anywhere on his arms), and no waist or mid-torso articulation (even though the mold is clearly designed for a mid-torso swivel).

It's barely more articulated than a Green Lantern figure.

Now I want the line to do well just so they'll maybe bring him out on a single card with better articulation. He's a cool-looking figure otherwise.

Prem1x 05-20-2011 12:58 PM

I could care less about the movie figures, but they should've been a little taller. that said, huge disappointment and missed opportunity to get collector money on comic:
Sif
Fandrall
Volstagg
Hogun
Beta Ray Bill
Thunderstrike
Odin
Executioner
Heimdall
Balder
Ultimate Thor
Loki (female, armored, etc)
Hela
Surtur
Hyde
Grey Gargoyle
Hercules
Ares

Then repack
Absorbing Man
Wrecker (and the crew)
Enchantress
Destroyer (w/comic head)
Sentry (painted as Void?)

Along with almost every other character you listed

Marv0850 05-20-2011 02:39 PM

You know, in all honesty this figure is not BAD he has great articulation at this scale and feels very solid.. the detail/paint apps are nice too. I don't want it to seem that there is NOTHING redeeming about him because he is pretty cool.

But my argument stands about how tall he is and the missed opp on the comic series.

Beta Ray Bill +1 please :D

Probably a triple rainbow, which would promptly be posted to youtube.

Jmacq1 05-20-2011 04:22 PM

If it's any consolation, I'm pretty sure we'll get Beta Ray Bill in the Marvel Universe line sooner or later.

Jason Abbadon 05-20-2011 04:28 PM

That Heimdall id weird- the back of the bard clearly shows the torso ariculation!
Bad Hasbro! No cookie from me!

I wonder how his head would look on an Odin body....does Odin have the torso swivel?
