A discussion about leg joints

Ok so not the most riveting discussion but if you are a Marvel 3 3/4 enthusiast this is typically the biggest difference that separates figures for us.

For example:

MU: TYPICALLY Peg joints
Iron Man/XMO/Thor: Ball Joints
Cap:Ball joint with thigh swivel

MU is regarded as having the best articulation out of any of these lines as the thigh swivel is becoming more and more common. But of course we have all been victims to some of MU's lack of quality control.

The big question is, what do you prefer when it comes to your legs?

Tarquinius 06-06-2011 09:18 AM

The way I see it is that each leg design has its own pros and cons:

MU: better command of the articulation, falls off easily

Balljoints: doesn't fall off, can be very very stiff and hard to use

Balljoints with thigh swivel (Cap figures): doesn't fall off but is the most restrictive.

I dislike peg joint legs because they pop-off pretty easy. The mold shared by Havok/Black Costume Spiderman/Archangel/Multiple Man/iceman and many more, being my least favorite.

Saint Phe 06-06-2011 11:08 AM

I DEFINITELY prefer the MU leg joint. Only maybe three of my many, many MU figures have a problem with the legs popping off. In my opinion, it's the most functional style. And that's what counts.

DogFashionDisco 06-06-2011 11:37 AM

I know for a fact that the leg joints on Orange Goblin were terrible, so I'd avoid opening one up if you happen to find it.

Optimus Vader 06-06-2011 11:41 AM

I like MU style the best. Unless the joints on an MU figure are super-loose, they're usually the easiest to pose for me.

Prem1x 06-06-2011 11:49 AM

New MU for me: Thor, Wrecker, JL Cyclops, Cable, AIM, GR, etc. Easiest on the eyes with best capability for posing.

I haven't played much with the Cap figures as they are mostly just stand-ins for me, but I hate HATE the XMO balls joints. Too small to manipulate them well and heaven forbid if they are frozen out of the package.

This is actually a SUPER important issue for me. And it looks like it is for other people too.

Every single 3 3/4 figure should have Gi Joe legs. They are amazing and are one of the few things that make me buy a Gi Joe figure every so often, just to make sure they don't f*ck up the legs. So far, Hasbro hasn't failed me :)

brianregan09 06-06-2011 05:44 PM

agree with Tibirius they should all have Joe articulation you have to practily pull of there legs to break them

Saint Phe 06-06-2011 06:02 PM

I think we can all agree on GI Joe legs. But for some stupid reason Hasbro refuses to use them in the other lines.

TheLoudMaster 06-06-2011 06:10 PM

I wonder if Hasbro would make ball joints like Bandai does for their SH Figuarts line.

They look like their normal ball joints on the movie lines but they actually move forward like a normal cut or ball in the leg joint.

I do like the fact that newer figures are carrying that thigh swivel. It makes for more capabilities. I also like the legs on Cyke & Cable (guess good articulation runs in the family) since they have all the best qualities & I see Sacarlet Spider might be the first of many thinner characters with the new legs so the doors are slowly opening with all of them to get the best quality control as far as the legs go so I'm pretty happy with that.

The XMOW figures are terrible for having tiny ball joints. I have HUGE hands so with that being the case they need to keep up the style they have started using since the figures who have employed it are much more versatile cause of it

behindthemask 06-06-2011 08:57 PM

Majority of my XMO figures especially gambit fall over just starring at them 2 hard, they do a domino effect.. for the most part without the stands a lot of the figures would topable over fast... I'm at the point where some of my figures are just laying on figures or falling on, sitting beside... My cabinet is almost full I need me some apex stands and bases to help spread it all out,.. hence my latest purchases still left MOC.

Of the Marvel lines mentioned, I would probably say MU gets my vote. But I really do wish Hasbro would use G.I.Joe-styled articulation or (dare I dream) come up with an equivalent to Figuarts articulation.

That'd be pretty sick, really. I would love to see a Figuarts styled hip joint on such a small figure.

On another note, why can't Bandai make their American toys that articulated?

Because Bandai of Japan hates us and Bandai of America is run by lazy bastards.*

*Pure speculation and mild frustration on my part. Power Rangers toys could be sooo much better if they'd take a cue or two from Hasbro. Hell, even SWTF have better articulation and accuracy.

Jason Abbadon 06-07-2011 03:05 PM

Anything but more of the WWI Cap (SDCC Cap). that thing's knee joints SUCK!
The plasic is soft and the knee joints had to be renforced with super glue- right out of the package!
Worse still, the knees..well, the pants sorta stop at the knee and start again just below it- making the knee joint this too-skinny straight piece of plastic.

Redlantern161 06-07-2011 03:48 PM

@ Jason Abbadon which method works better the nail polish of the super glue?

& anyone care to explain GI Joe articulation? I never collected them before

Shin Densetsu 06-07-2011 05:08 PM

Prefer MU style with thigh swivel and rocker ankles, but TheLoudMaster's SH Figurart's suggestion is good too.
