Guide on how to play video on your console

If you're like me, you have tons of videos of cartoons or live action tv shows that you absolutely can't do without. Are you tired of watching them on your little 15" monitor while your giant 50" TV is going unused? Well, look no further! Watch your videos via your game console! But MP33, how do I do this?

Oooh, thanks for the link! I've been wanting to do this for a long time on my PS3!

I actually tried it out last night and it works pretty well. Though keep in mind, if you keep the program running, and sharing, it will kill your DL speed. At least it did with mine.

My 2Wire router doesn't support UPnP. :(

Yeah, you need to get a new router my friend. They're fairly inexpensive. I recommend a linksys or netgear.

Well somehow I got it to work anyway, but it buffers way too much to be a viable video server. I was watching the bitrate go from 4kbps to over 300 and then back down again. The video and sound quality was good when it played but the play never seemed to last more than a few seconds. Any ideas as to how to improve the transfer rate? I tried turning off all apps that would drain bandwidth but it didn't help.

Are you going over wireless or wired? Do you have DSL or cable modem?

My recent problem I've discovered that not all of my vid files can play on the ps3. I did some tweaks to the software this morning, but haven't had a chance to see if they worked yet.

Due to the set up and the way my townhouse is constructed, I have to have wireless. My wireless router/access point is downstairs where I can connect to DSL. My PS3 is wirelessly connected but is less than a foot and a half from the router. My 360 (when I get it back from RRoD) is hardwired. My PC, where my video is stored, is upstairs and is connected via wi-fi, and I have an Ubuntu Linux machine (currently powered down) sharing the internet connection with the PC.

Update:

Finally got my XBox 360 back from its second RRoD. Tried the streaming video server setup with it and it works BEAUTIFULLY. No buffering or anything. I finally found something the 360 can do BETTER than the PS3! LOL.

Did you use TVeristy to stream? Friend of mine told me that he tried it with both his xbox and ps3 and said the ps3 performed way better. So I'd be curious if you used that and how it worked for you.
