Marvel Universe -Best, Worst, Under/Overrated

I've heard this discussed on other threads and thought this deserved its own thread for everyone to discuss their personal favorites, dislikes and underrated/overrated Marvel Universe figures and have a discussion on each.
Feel free to also throw in Thor, Captain America, Iron Man 2 toy lines.
It may be easy to copy and paste in your answers if you'd like.

Marvel Universe
Best - Cable with Baby Hope, awesome accessories with a freakin baby, changable chest plates, and weapons you dont normally see. Helluva sculp also.
Runner up - WW2 Hulk, SDCC Ages of Thunder Thor

Worst - Weapon X Wolverine, terrible paint apps on every one ive seen.
Runner up - Mary Jane with Dog, terrible clothing and whats with the dog? Looks like something that would come with one of my daughter toys.

Underrated - Sunfire, nice sculpt and paint apps
Runner up - Bucky, awesome twin guns and great paint apps

Overrated - Archangel, the mold is pretty weak as is the face sculpt and the wings are pretty cheap.
Runner up - Warpath, Vision - both ok but not worth what they are going for.

Captain America
Best - Bucky Cap, terrific paint apps with beautiful shiny paint
Runner up - WW2 Cap, perfect redo of SDCC WW2 Cap

Worst - Arctic Cap, damn silly pajama Cap
Runner up - any of the other 10 cap figures

Underrated - US Agent, awesome shield and good machine gun
Runner up - Winter Soldier, probably better than MU version

Overrated - Red Skull, face sculpt is kinda poor and paint apps on some are garbage
Runner up - Ultimates Cap, dont like any of the Caps from this line but some prefer this over MU versions which Im not sure why.

Thor
Best - Destroyer, could have been a little larger but sick figure with somewhat cool light up feature
Runner up - frost giants, great detail on deluxe and single carded versions.

Worst - Any of the Thor's
Runner up - Again, any of the Thors.

Underrated - Frost Giants, good army builders.
Runner up - Again, Frost Giants, good army builders.

Overrated - Warriors Three, dont know whats so special about these other than being hard to find, I think they all look like crap.
Runner up - Any of the Warriors Three.

Iron Man 2
Best - Mandarin, worth the hype
Runner up - Comic Whiplash, Drones (awesome army builders)

Worst - Whiplash, terrible face sculpt
Runner up - Subterreanean armor Iron Man, other concept series

Underrated - Iron Monger
Runner up - Blue Iron Monger

Overrated - Nick Fury, better Sam Jack head on SW figures, would rather have seen comic series Nick Fury instead
Runner up - Ultimate Iron Man, decent but looks kinda cheesy in hand.

Thanks for participating! All comments, suggestions and opinions welcome!

Tiberius 09-05-2011 08:32 PM

Did this really need a thread? Lol just bugging you dude. Anyways. To make it quick, Vision is over rated, big time. I'd even pass on him at retail. Only want one for the cape and head to make a taller, slimmer one.

ORIO 09-05-2011 08:41 PM

Hnm. Don't have much to contribute. Other than I think Cable and Jim Lee Cyclops are both badass figures

Greenskar 09-05-2011 08:55 PM

Marvel Universe
Best - WW Hulk
Runner up - Cable with Baby Hope

Worst - Weapon X Wolverine
Runner up - SW Magneto. (Besides the head and cape this figure left much desired)
Underrated - Hawkeye/Dark Hawkeye. String up the bow and strategically place an arrow, or have him grabbing for the quiver and you're only limited by your imagination with this great figure.
Runner up - Black Widow
Overrated - Blade. Seriously. I left 3 on the peg once because two had only 1 fang and the last had no fangs.
Runner up - Vision. Being rare does not make this a better figure than any of the more recent sculpts being released.

Captain America
Best - Bucky Cap, terrific paint apps with beautiful shiny paint (agreed)
Runner up - Crossbones

Worst - Every figure lacking elbow swivels and a rotating wrist. WTF Hasbro?
Runner up - N/A

Underrated - Parachute Cap (go play with this thing now! I recommend using a slingshot)
Runner up - Winter Soldier, probably better than MU version (agreed)

Overrated - Red Skull, face sculpt is kinda poor and paint apps on some are garbage (agreed)
Runner up - Ultimates Cap, dont like any of the Caps from this line but some prefer this over MU versions which Im not sure why. (agreed)

Thor There was a Thor Line?

Iron Man 2
Best - Hulk Buster
Runner up - Mandarin
Worst - Whiplash, terrible face sculpt (agreed)
Runner up - Ultimate Iron Man, movie version. (extremely lazy)
Underrated - Iron Monger (agreed)
Runner up - Blue Iron Monger (agreed)

Overrated - Nick Fury, better Sam Jack head on SW figures, would rather have seen comic series Nick Fury instead (agreed)
Runner up - Ultimate Iron Man, decent but looks kinda chessy in hand. (this makes me sad to hear)

Do Boy 09-05-2011 08:59 PM

Don't have much of the other lines but I do have enough MU figures to make a list.

Marvel Universe:

Best - Doctor Strange. Best Articulations and great paint apps.

Runner up - Cable. Would have made first for me but it was the lack of wrist articulation that kept him from crossing the finish line first. But it was diffidently a photo finish.

Worst - Green/Grey Hulk. Single carded figure. Articulation sucks. Head sculpt just doesn't say "hulk" to me

Runner up - Storm (X-Men Team Pack). The horrible lack of arm movement got it runner up.

Underrated - Absorbing Man. Great sculpt. Awesome paint apps. And comes with a cool wrecking ball.

Runner up - Dark Hawkeye. Couldn't really pick between this or Absorbing Man, But since This one was pretty much Hawkeye I had to make him runner up.

Overrated - Vision (phasing) just doesn't seem like he should be worth so much money. Just a basic figure.

Runner up - Archangel. Hate the wings. Made runner up just because he looks so bad ass in a flying pose lol.

ludovicotek 09-05-2011 09:02 PM

Hmmm... I'll have to think about this for a minute. But off the top of my head I have to say the most criminally under-rated MU figures are Constrictor and Wrecker. Easily two of the best IMO.

I agree 1239877192382% They get no love and they are THE BEST figures out there. Only downfall with Constrictor is the lack of posibility in his constrictors

thechris 09-05-2011 09:19 PM

Marvel Universe
Best - Hawkeye - Great sculpt, great accessories, very comic book accurate.
Runner up - Sunfire - Great sculpt, great paint apps, lacking in the accessory department

Worst - Hulk - Poor head sculpt (possibly one of the worst), sculpted hand looks disproportionate
Runner up - Mary Jane - Poor head sculpt and overall look screams cheap and rushed

Underrated - Sunfire, nice sculpt and paint apps
Runner up - Bucky, new unique sculpt with unique gatling gun accessories

Overrated - Cable, nice head sculpt, but body seems too small and could've benefited from additional bulking out
Runner up - Jim Lee Cyclops, nice sculpts but colouring and lack of paint applications on the yellow plastic make this figure look a bit cheap

Iron Man 2
Best - Mandarin, excellent sculpt, detailed paint applications and comes with accessories as an added bonus to this already strong figure
Runner up - Hulkbuster Iron Man single pack, great articulation and sculpt, overall great

Worst - Whiplash, looks out of scale with the rest of the line
Runner up - Three Pack Hulkbuster Iron Man, this poor repaint of the Movie Iron Monger looks terrible when compared to the original, poor QC allowed many stuck joint figures to slip through the cracks

Underrated - Crimson Dynamo, fantastic figure, great scale, nice paint applications
Runner up - Titanium Man, excellent figure with nice articulation

Overrated - Modern War Machine, the neck is too long and the head swap takes some work on some figures, looks a bit goofy.
Runner up - Vibranium Armor Iron Man - Looks okay, but it would've been better if they used the Extremis Iron Man instead of this one for accuracy sake...

Do Boy 09-05-2011 09:35 PM

Compiling this list was definitely wasn't easy with well over 100 figures to pick and sort through. Good thread. Only easy part was 50% of it were Wolverine, Iron Man, and Spider-Man lol. 15% are just repaints.

Tiberius 09-05-2011 09:46 PM

Ooooookay, for real post now

Marvel Universe
Best - Cable with Baby Hope, awesome accessories with a freakin baby, changable chest plates, and weapons you dont normally see. Helluva sculp also. [ I AGREE]
Runner up - Doctor Strange, Constrictor, Iron Patriot.

Worst - Weapon X Wolverine
Runner up - Magneto [way to damn short] Sentry [Way to damn big, and has shit lips, but I still love him lol]

Underrated - Modern Thor. He gets no love...
Runner up - Hawkeye/Dark Hawkeye. Don't know why, they get no love either.

Overrated - WWH. Sure he is AWSOME, but to me, he's going to be replaced once the new Hulk comes out.
Runner up - Warpath, Vision

Captain America
Best - Bucky Cap, period.
Runner up - Us Agent

Worst - Almost all the other caps lol
Runner up - see above.

Underrated - US Agent, awesome shield and good machine gun
Runner up - Red Skull

Overrated - Any of the Captain Americas
Runner up - See above.

Thor
Best - None, period.
There is no point in filling out the rest, the wave failed, god like fail.

Iron Man 2
Best - Mandarin
Runner up - Comic Whiplash, Titanium Man

Worst - Almost all of the Iron Men
Runner up - See above.

Underrated - Classic Iron Monger
Runner up - Iron Monger, Crimson Dynamo

Overrated - Whiplash
Runner up - Mandarin, sure he is EPIC, he still still over-rated.

Colder Soldier 09-05-2011 09:47 PM

Marvel Universe
Best - Cable with Baby- For the first time, an MU with a great sculpt and *gasp* accessories! Too bad the bonus accessory (Hope) isn't included with all of them. At $8+ a piece, they all need to come with something!
Runner up -Juggernaut- great sculpt, great scale and just the perfect 1/18th Jugg all around. Not super veiny, no tiny waist, no monkey arms. He doesn't really need accessories (cuz he's the Juggernaut, blip!), but the lack of the little things (removeable helmet, M'Krann crystal maybe?) is what keeps him from the #1 spot.

Worst - Blade- Another horrible kitbash on Hasbro's part. It's even worse when they use what was a mediocre body sculpt to begin with. Give him a repugnant headsculpt and that makes Marvel's most under-used character, MU's most lame figure. At least his Wesley weapons were okay.
Runner up - Luke Cage (modern). Suffers from the same miscalculated formula Blade does for the most part. Add a bad paintjob (what is up with MU's splotchy skin tones?!! It's like Cage, Warpath, Ultimate Cap, etc, have eczema or something!), and the lack of costume subtituted for what whomever at Marvel/Hasbro think black guys usually wear; we end up with this garbage toy.

Underrated - All Wolverines made from the comic XMO sculpt. I love these guys. I love that someone at Hasbro remembered Logan is only 5'3 and built a small sculpt to represent that. I love they keep re-painting and re-decoing the sculpt the same great sculpt. It gives the toy's consistency and makes them all feel like the same character. Much unlike Cyclops, who has 3+ different figs all with different heights and body types.
Runner up -Sunfire. < Yep. He's a bit beefy, but damn what an awesome figure! Never knew I was such a Sunfire fan before this fig came out.

Overrated - Most of them. High-ups on the list include the non-XMO Wolverine sculpts, the skinny Captain Americas, the less than dynamic physique of modular (modern) Iron Man, and the WW Hulk who can't fit a single one of his accessories (armor, gauntlet, or weapons!).
Runner up - The rest of the most of them. Archangel, every ugly Hulk, Silver Surfer (and every fig that uses that super-sinewy bodu sculpt), the Punishers, the non-poseable Hand figs, etc.

Captain America
Best - Bucky Cap- Near Flawless. Every Hasbro super-hero fig could follow suit.
Runner up -Crossbones- I wish he could ADS but hell, most GIJoes can't even do that.

Worst - Target exclusive Fire and Ice Cap. Easily the worst fig of the line.
Runner up - WW2 Comic Cap. This is also the most overrated figure. The paintjob is much worse than the SDCC version, and what is with the love for skinny MU Caps??? Since when did they lace the super-soldier serum with the trim spa formula? He's so lanky and awkward looking it's hard to notice he's wearing a modified army paratrooper uniform. He's awkward body type also hinders his own articulation.

Underrated - Winter Soldier. I probably should've made him runner up for best. Another near-flawless JB figure, it's freakin' mind-boggling people still try to compare the MU version with him.
Runner up - Arctic Cap- Yeah, it's a weird variant which I don't even know ever appeared in a comic. But practical, conservatively outfitted Cap's should be the goal for the "made-up" variants of this line.

Overrated - WW2 Comic Cap. Just horrible. See above.
Runner up - Red Skull. He looks like he suffers from MU Cap-itis. Waaay too puny for what Red Skull should be.

ludovicotek 09-05-2011 10:14 PM

Marvel Universe
Best - Wrecker, Colossus (Giant Size X-Men set)
Runner up - AIM Soldier

Worst - Multiple Man. Just such a plain-ass figure. Don't really care for him (the customs where people have added his jacket really makes a difference)
Runner up -

Underrated - Wrecker, Constrictor, AIM Soldier
Runner up - Dark Spider-Man (Venom), Electro

Overrated - Blade
Runner up - Archangel (Have to admit. Great character, lackluster figure)

Captain America
Best - Bucky Cap
Runner up - Crossbones

Worst - Arctic Cap
Runner up - Red Skull (really don't care for the head)

Underrated - Red Guardian
Runner up - Winter Soldier (great rendition of the character)

Overrated - Red Skull
Runner up - Hydra Troops (they're ok. Again, don't like their heads)

Thor
Best - Destroyer
Runner up - Frost Giant

Worst - Secret Strike Loki (about as boring a figure as you can get)
Runner up - Blaster Armor Thor

Underrated - Sorcerer's Fury Loki (what a difference a paint job makes. Nice saturated colors)
Runner up - Sword Spike Thor (incredible detail on a 3 3/4" figure, but a bit too short)

Overrated - Volstagg
Runner up - Odin

Iron Man 2
Best - Mandarin
Runner up - Comic Iron Monger

Worst - Countless repaint armors
Runner up - countless repaint armors

Underrated - Movie Mark I and Mark II Armors
Runner up - Movie Iron Monger

Overrated - any repaint armor
Runner up - any repaint armor

X-Men Origins Wolverine
Best - Sabretooth (short hair)
Runner up - Deadpool

Worst - Movie Deadpool
Runner up - Strike Mission Wolverine

Underrated - Movie Wolverine w/ jacket
Runner up - Movie Sabretooth

Overrated - Gambit
Runner up - Astonishing Cyclops

deadpool 09-05-2011 10:23 PM

Worst: Jean Grey (90's) I went to take some photos, put the blast affect on hand her hand snapped off!

stjuggernaut 09-05-2011 10:54 PM

i assume you mean cheesy? but i think ultimate iron man is one of the coolest in the entire MU!

thechris 09-05-2011 11:01 PM

I didn't care for the white circle eyes helmet. Thankfully it had both versions.

Boba Fettuccini 09-05-2011 11:55 PM

Marvel Universe
Best - Cable. What can I say?First MU figure I looked at and was genuinely impressed by.
Runner up - I know I don't have him in hand yet, but the new Steve Rogers. It looks badass, and has all the new articulation tricks... it's gonna rock.

Worst - N/A
Runner up - All the female body sculpt figures.

Underrated - N/A
Runner up - N/A

Overrated - Archangel. Those wings look so stupid. I'll wait for them to remake him with a better body, and more accurate wings.
Runner up - Dr. Doom. It looks ok, but as a toy, it fails. The cape it too stiff, the gun doesn't even stay in the holster... its only redemtion is that it's Dr. friggin' DOOM.

Captain America
Best - Movie Cap. It's everything the movie Cap should have been, sans bomber jacket.
Runner up - WW2 Cap. Isn't quite as good as the SDCC version, because the colors are off. And the shoulder articulation is kinda bad... but it's still a nice looking, technical figure.

Worst - Arctic Cap. Really? REALLY?
Runner up - N/A

Underrated - WInter Soldier. he pegwarmed for awhile, but he really is a good figure. Leaves the MU one in the dust.
Runner up - N/A

Overrated - Captain Britain. He's cool, but if you really look at the torso... the size of it is really screwy. He's ok, but not quite as good as he should be.
Runner up - N/A

Thor
Best - Hogun. His accessory is cool and useful, his sculpt is accurate, and it looks nice on the shelf.
Runner up - Frost Giants, Sif

Worst - Blaster armor Thor.
Runner up - Light-up hammer Thor, Loki repaint

Underrated - Warriors 3. A lot of people give em no love. They're rare, and that's sad, because they're pretty decent likenesses and as figures they're as a whole much better than the main Thors.
Runner up - N/A

Overrated - Destroyer. It's a necessary figure, but let's face it... it SUCKS. No waist articulation because of a pointless light-up feature. The shoulders are a thowback to the 90s. We should have better shoulders on a figure in 2011. Come one.
Runner up - Fandral. Though I like the Warriors 3 figures, he's just... to gimmicked. his armor isn't that great, his sword is flimsy, and the scabbard doesn't blend with the figure at all. The cape comes off, but if you take it off, you have this ridiculous chest armor jutting off...

Iron Man 2
Best - N/A
Runner up - N/A

Worst - Comic series Modern Iron Man. Ok, um... 2011. Nice scult, yes, but no elbow swivel? Really? And whats up with the shoulder flap armor pieces? They fall off any time you try to pose it!
Runner up - Comic series War Machine (those damn shoulders!)

Underrated - Movie armors. I think a lot of the people here don't give movie lines enough credit... these are cool figures.
Runner up - N/A

Overrated - Drones. Ok, yeah, they're cool, but their articulation makes it impossible to really pose them. I fixed mine by dremeling off the little skirt thingy to allow forward and backward joint movement, but that should have been done already.
Runner up - Anything comic series really. There were a lot of things that needed to be done better.

behindthemask 09-06-2011 12:02 AM

xmo

Best: deadpool tons of weapons and was cheap at the time,
runners up: maverick and gambit, solid sculpt and weapons, just a bitch to stand. Blob, limited articulation worth the money, sabertooth, to me this is a mini ML representation.

epic fail: wolverine in guardsman gear and the logan figures paint apps suck

Spidey line

best: venom, rhino, carnage

runners up
: shocker, lizard,scorpion

Thor

best: sif, warriors 3

runner up: destroyer in either size

epic fail
: Making Odin without a helmet, that and the rediculous weapons they gave the figures

iLegends73 09-06-2011 12:15 AM

Marvel Universe
Best Jim lee Cyclops, Scarlet Spider WW Hulk. paint is on point, sculpt is great and the articulation is tops (so far)
Under rated Silver Samurai, Bleeding Edge Armor Iron Man
Over hyped Warpath, Vison, XMO Gambit

Captain America
Best Bucky Cap. just put the sheild from the heavy artiliery cap on him and he is almost as awesome as i am
Underrated---
Over hyped RedSkull & Crossbones. just because they were the hardest to find dont make em great

Thor So far im not impressed by any of the ones i've seen.

Iron-Man2 Advanced Mark IV (the one thats just a MU sized Modular Armor from the ML line)
Underrated Crimson Dynamo. i just picked it up for the eyeblast but it is actually a gud solid figure
Over hyped Mandarin. saw it in pix, and stumbled across a youtube review and just not impressed. idk why he's so sought after

Spider-Man line
Best so far Lizard. ive seen SS venom and he's huge but the paints is kinda purple blueish instead of black. saw scorpion in retail and he looks like a flop
Underrated---
Over hyped SS Venom

Boba Fettuccini 09-06-2011 02:49 AM

Bleeding Edge armor wasn't an IM2 figure...

omega145 09-06-2011 05:51 AM

Ah yes, forgot about these two lines, thanks for bringing them into the conversation Ludo and behindthemask.

XMO
Best - Deadpool, actually prefer this over the MU version besides the harness
Runner up - Sabretooth, 2 pack version

Worst - Mission Strike Wolverine, almost as bad as MU Weapon X Wolverine
Runner up - movie Deadpool, hate the look of Wade Wilson in the movie and this is it

Underrated - Maverick, solid figure and isnt talked about that much
Runner up - Logan, pretty good face sculpt, swap claws for real claws and near perfect

Overrated - Blob, good sculpt but yet awful articulation
Runner up -Iceman, terrible articulation but the cool see through look saves him

Spiderman
Best - Lizard, love the size and paint apps
Runner up - Rhino, awesome facial sculpt, minus points for lack articulation due to size

Worst - Doc Ock, terrible go find the Marvel Legends Showdown Doc Ock
Runner up - Ninja Spiderman and the other terrible spiderman incarnations

Underrated - Venom w/tongue out, only hear talk about SS Venom and this version I prefer better
Runner up - Carnage, dont hear much talk on this, solid representation of Carnage

Overrated - Stretch Strike Venom, size is cool but dont like color
Runner up - Shocker, too much talk on him when hes ok but nothing special

Great choices so far, I do agree that all of the Wreckers and Constricter are VERY underrated and excellent MU figures. Not an easy list to compile at all, took me a while to type out the start of the thread. Thanks to everyone for contributing.
And I did mean to say cheesy as opposed to chessy stjuggernaut... :)

quinten182 09-06-2011 06:30 AM

I may have missed it.. but worst figure made in my opinion was by far the Blob figure in the 2-pack with Sabretooth. Granted, that's XMO only, but his articulation is horrendous. There's no getting over them legs.

behindthemask 09-06-2011 06:30 AM

Omega, couldn't agree with you more on this " Underrated - Venom w/tongue out, only hear talk about SS Venom and this version I prefer better
Runner up - Carnage, dont hear much talk on this, solid representation of Carnage"

To me the 90's version Spidey cartoon they did on fox, was the best animated series since Tim Burton's Animated batman in the early 90's, not as dark but the animation was so good I was constantly watching it, and following character lines, and venom was always 1 of my favorites and the regular venom IMO is an amazing figure, only issues I think anybody really has with him is the lack of arm and wrist movement and knew movement. Had they added these definatley would be tied with wwh IMO. The same can be said for Blob, great sculpt, scale could be slightly bigger but the real issues are with massive hands you should atleast be able to flex those guns and pick enemies up, instead of just raising your arm up and down like your asking the teacher a question. I have yet to get carnage but feel he's a decent represntation of the character and with a slightly brighter red paint job looks amazing. Seriously need to get me a cable though so I can fully appreciate his awesomeness.

I also agree that gambit is overhyped, the reason he has hype at all is because he's been the only gambit figure ever released, he's not bad, but not great, hopefully the comic 2pack version that's be released is better and not just a repaint.

Optimus Vader 09-06-2011 07:33 AM

I'm going to consolidate the lines into one (kind of how I look at Marvel 3.75"), but I'll give five for each.

Best:
-Cable w/ Baby Hope
-WW Hulk
-Crossbones (movie line)
-Bucky Cap (movie line)
-Juggernaut

Worst:
-Bucky Cap from MU GB set (clear #1 in this category for me)
-Jean Gray
-Doc Ock (both from Spidey line)
-All comic Caps from movie line that are not Bucky Cap

Underrated:
-Constrictor (I saw him mentioned a few times already as being underrated, so maybe he isn't)
-Gambit (XMO)
-Movie Cap (seems like many prefer comic looks better.. I usually do too, but I love this figure)
-The Thing (any version--I keep reading how this mold needs to be retired, but it looks like a perfect Thing representation to me)
-Rhino (Spidey Line--Venom and Lizard aren't the only gems from this line)

Overrated:
-Beast (MLS version--it's our only Beast, so people need him, but he could be so much better)
-Blade (I love Blade as much as the next guy, but I think his rareness is what makes him so desirable)
-Thanos (a must have character, I know, but he's just ok for me)
-Cyclops (XMO--we have a few better options, but I still see him in many pictures)
US Agent (Cap movie line)

Do Boy 09-06-2011 07:41 AM

Spiderman:

Best - Lizard. Great paint apps. Good articulation for being in the spider-man line.
Runner up - Carnage. Man This toy is awesome. Would have made first if he came with some better accessories

Worst - Doc Ock. Man just horrible articulation for some with with 4 mechanical arms.
Runner up - Toxic Blast Venom. No knee or waits/torso articulation. WTH. Only reason he didn't make first is because he just looks awesome.

Underrated - Ben Reilly Spider-Man. Lacks so much articulation for being a Spider-Man figure but just looks amazing. Might be the only time we see this version but who knows

Runner up - Carnage. Solid representation of Carnage (agreed with Omega) Made runner up because he was already on best list.

Overrated - Shocker, too much talk on him when hes ok but nothing special
Runner up - SS Venom. Only because I don't have him lol.
