Actor likenesses in movie lines

Am I the only one who feels that they should stop trying to sculpt actor's faces on 3.75" figures?? I really think they turn out horrible. The Thor and Cap figures just looked...bad. I think these figures would sell a little better if they didn't look so damn awful.
Remember the GI Joe movie line from a few years ago?If they just sculpted them to look as they should (comic style), rather than trying to capture Sienna Miller or that blockhead who played Duke, the line would've been better. Those Baroness figures were cringe inducing...

Just my humble opinion, but I think that practice should be canned...

stjuggernaut 09-21-2011 10:38 AM

no you definitely need a movie version of the characters. yeh sometimes they dont look good. the thor one is better than people give it credit for.

raybot customs repainted it and it actually looked alot more like chris hemsworth without having to alter the sculpt at all.

generally movie 3.75 figures are hit and miss with the likeness.

yeh baroness didnt look a thing like her, but then again sienna miller is so generic looking it would be hard to get it to look like her and you know its her. she doesnt really have any distinguishing features about her face, unlike angelina jolie lets say, the jaw / eyes. sienna is very plain jane. duke wasnt bad, and ripcord was spot on.

it would probably be one of the least popular decisions in the eyes of the fans if they just abandoned doing 3.75 movie figures and just did the comic ones to coincide with the movie release. i think there would be an uprising.

I agree that most characters that try to resemble movie actors come out at worst awful and best below average but that's there way of producing toys based off of the movie.
From the ROC GI Joe toy line to the Cap and Thor movie line, the best figures were the non-movie based figures.
Those repainted Thor figures came out great!

I think they should continue to produce movie figures that look like the actors, but include a variant head that does not.

Do Boy 09-21-2011 11:36 AM

I hope they get Spider-Man's face sculpt right.... :p and I'm not talking about Peter Parker lol

I like this idea a lot.

But I think they should at least continue to try improving the process, so that future lines will be better. And it's not like every movie has had bad sculpts. The 6" MK IV from IM2 had a pretty spot-on rendition of RDJ, IMO.

Btw, does Cap even have any unmasked movie figures in the line? I can't recall any offhand.

miketime 09-21-2011 11:42 AM

I agree with the need for better likeness's in the 4 inch scale but they need to make them look like the actors so kids will want to buy them. Those Joe movie figs were and are fugly. Maybe they should only hire actors that look like the characters they are representing. Problem solved. I know a lot of effort goes into sculpting and design and it's a shame when a bad face or deco ruins an otherwise great looking fig.

stjuggernaut 09-21-2011 12:10 PM

yeh they def do need to put more effort in, or atleast do them the way WWE or jakks do their figures with computer scans, rather than sculpters.

although i dont see how an alternate comic book head would fit the movie body? the suits would normally be quite different and in thors case, he is smaller than his comic book version as are most movie guys compared to their mr. universe physique comic counterparts

i do agree they need to improve the likeness a whole lot though.

Boba Fettuccini 09-21-2011 12:16 PM

Mattel did the computer scans with Green Lantern, and those Ryan Reynolds heads were SPOT. ON. Get with the program Hasbro!

stjuggernaut 09-21-2011 12:24 PM

the heads were spot on, so were the designs of the suits, shame about the actual figure and its articulation.. or lack of. and its weird ultra straight legs.

quinten182 09-21-2011 12:26 PM

Cap line had no unmasked figures. In fact, Commander Rogers is first official unmasked release of Steve.

I would always prefer comic likeness over movie. A warriors 3 comic pack would have been amazing. I bought the 3 movie ones, but.. just not the same, they're 3 over priced figures I regret.

True! But sadly, that's where anything good about those figures stops.

Unless you count the assortments. Again, Hasbro can get on board with that. But that's for another thread! ;)

meh if you really want detail ! i would suggest hottoys figures yh they are expensive and bigger but you are getting what you paid for , but unfortunally they dont do 3.75 " or 6" so its really up to you , i go for 6" cause of better detail

stjuggernaut 09-21-2011 01:20 PM

if you are really inclined. i know a guy who will hydroshrink down a hot toys head down to 3.75 inch scale. ive had him do it with dc direct mcguinness superman and aquaman to JLU size and its perfect. he has said he can do hot toys.

it cost me $20 for the process and 2 casts of the head (so $40 for supes and aqua heads that i needed) obviously he send the original back too.

i dont know how much a hot toys one would cost because obviously he would have to use more silicone for the initial cast.

but thor would be aaamazing with a hot toys head!!!

I need to see pics of this "hydroshrink", sounds almost like a joke to take a $200 Hot Toys figure then shrink the head to fit a 3.75" figure when the body still looks like crap. For all that money your spending on the hot toys head, process and cast, you could just commission an excellent customizer to make one for you.
