EW Rumors New Films, Imagine the Toylines?
 

EW has reported in their Avengers issue thats coming out that Marvel Studios is currently planning 2 brand new film propertys. get ready for these

Guardians of the Galaxy and the Inhumans!

2 Ensamble movie franchises that could be huge if done properly.

But Imagine the toylines. Suddenly we get a giant chance to get Lockjaw, Blackbolt, Medusa, Gamora, a Giant Groot, Moondragon, Phylla Vell, and more. Let the Speculation and awesomenuess fly!

Sidenote : I added the ? to the title since there seems to be a ton of threads that end with them now

Movies of such obscure properties WILL fail. I'm calling it now. They never got TV shows or anything, everybody's gonna go "What the hell is this?" and only super-nerds will see it and buy any product. The movie will be taken out of most theaters within two weeks, and the toys would get clearanced like nobody's business.

They are really pushing guardians of the galaxy... Rocket Raccoon is appearing everywhere now...i'm personally not interested at all.

I saw the EW magazine pictures and they looked good.

I really can't imagine these doing too well, I mean your casual movie goer isn't going to know jack shit about these teams...they don't have any well known characters...I mean hardcore marvel fans will probably enjoy it, but it won't be enough to turn a profit, and as fail-worthy as some of marvel's films have been they don't need this in their life.

not true. Blade is about as obscure as the Guardians of the Galaxy. I mean, what none comic reader knew about Blade? he wasnt in any of the movies or tv shows. Maybe one or two episodes of the 90s spidey, but so was the Spot. yet he got a trilogy. obviously theres some success there since they made more.

Road to Perdition. that was a success. 80 million to make, 160million gross
A History of Violence, The Mask, Red, 300, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Hellboy, Kickass, Sin City.
The Casual Movie viewer didnt know those. I'd say the film has the same chances as any of those. Those werent known by the mainstreme. Many considered them Obscure. Yet they raked in the cash.
and I'm fairly certain Ironman wasnt as Mainstream as many think before Robert Downey Jr and Jon Favraeu brought him to life. Atleast to the Casual Moviegoer

Guardians of the Galaxy and Inhumans has the same chance to be successfull just like every other film, even moreso since its under the Marvel/Disney Juggernaut.

Blade got a trilogy because he plays into the gritty vampire-slaying action genre. I bet most people didn't even know he was Marvel. Same with Hellboy. He only worked because it was funny, and had action and monsters.

Guardians of the Galaxy? Lets see. A guy called 'Star Lord'. A big green guy. A raccoon. A potted plant... and they do what? They fight non-mainstream villains nobody really knows about. So tell me how well you really think the general public is going to take the Adventures of Rocket Raccoon and Starlord. I cal 2/10 on Rottentomatoes unless they have the most incredible producers, directors and actors in the history of filmmaking.

Don't say I'm being negative. Just realistic. This will not work on the silver screen. A cartoon direct to DVD? Yeah, definitely. But the silver screen...?

It depends on how the movies are made as to whether or not they are successful.

I'm sorry to say this, but you have absolutly zero idea who is in the guardians of the galaxy, obviously. Youve never read the book, so you dont know what your talking about.
You are the Casual Moviegoer. You are basing your opinion early on news and some action figures. Call me when youve seen a trailer and know whose in it and directing it if you think people will see it.

I've glanced through them. And as such, I can say that as a casual viewer, I, and millions other like me, would never go see it. There's just no bigscreen appeal to the characters at all. No cutesie teen romance like SPider-man, no giant robots like Iron Man, no clawed badasses like WOlverine, no WWII action like Captain America... all things that a casual viewer enjoys regardless of how in to comics they are.

I agree 99% of this. I don't agree with Iron Man thou. I think he was more than enough to be consider mainstream.

Both are interesting choices for films and both could have potential to be great films. Not necessarily successful, but enjoyable movies. The success would rely heavily on the studio educating the public about the properties and characters beforehand and positive word of mouth.

@Nexodusrex: you make some good points about how an obscure property can translate into a financially/critically successful film. But you really can't compare any of those titles to Guardians of the Galaxy or Inhumans. These two are pretty much straight up sci-fi stories, and unfortunately there's a stigma in our culture that sci-fi = geeks. I know I'm overly simplifying here, but very few Sci-Fi films are runaway success. Not to say these don't have a chance. I think there's plenty of potential. But just look at Green Lantern. He's way more recognizable than either of these two properties and that movie tanked. Bad.

You definitely can't compare either to Blade. As Boba points out, they're completely different beasts. The public at large is generally comfortable with vampire tales.

As far as toylines go, I honestly don't see these movies getting their own dedicated toy line. I think Marvel has said that these movies aren't going to be quite as big production-wise. Look at what we got for the Thor movie. There was way more potential there to do great things with a toy line for that movie. I mean, we didn't even get comic-style figures. And it's not exactly like you can do several variations of the Guardians or Inhumans. I would be happy if they just released the Inhumans in the MU line in conjunction with the film's release.

MU tie-ins would probably be it. Maybe a store exclusive box-set of an entire team, like the X-men pack or something.

I can make the same arguement about any movie.
No Cutsie Teen Romance like Spiderman, No Clawed Badasses Like Wolverine. No WW2 Action like Captain America. This movie is gonna suck. Oh wait, Its one of the highest grossing films of all time. Its called Star Wars.

Whose to say a Gaurdians of the Galaxy movie would even end up resembling the comic if made.

Hollywood probably sees it as Star Wars with Superheros which to them translates into $$$.

lol Yes, but Star Wars does have some major badasses in it. And they do eventually get to the romance. And maybe not WW2, but it does take place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

And Mr. Chow is the biggest badass of all time, so there :P

And Rocket Raccoon is a badass. So is Drax. I mean, Drax ripped out Thanos's Heart.

my argument is you cant guess what will and wont be a success. it just has to have good acting, good plot, and a good director.

I can guarentee you, if Jason Statham would play Starlord, and Ron Perlman play the voice of Rocket Raccoon, and its directed by JJ Abrams(Even though I think he's a HACK), it will sell. simple as that.

Oh yeah, the Guardians are without a doubt badasses. So are the Inhumans. Like I said, there's plenty of potential for these to be epic ass movies.

I see your point, but you failed to mention any version of The Punisher. Heck, the Hulk movies didn't even do well.

Punisher and Hulk 1 are examples of Mainstream characters who failed to have good movies made. People know whot he punisher and Hulk are. I mean, Hulk, lou ferrigno, bill bixby. do the math. And the Punisher has that iconic shirt that has sold greatly so people had some knowledge

and while I'm at it, do you think the casual moviegoer would be interested in Doctor Strange? as I'm aware, theres a huge "We want Strange" Film, but Magic has proven to fail and succeed in the box office. Doctor Strange has a greater chance of failing than Guardians of the Galaxy

I really liked The Incredible Hulk a lot, the one with Edward Norton. I thought that was a highly enjoyable movie, although it wasn't a runaway smash hit.

Dr. Strange. Now that's a movie I would love to see. And supposedly one is in the works. But you're right Nexo, magic is generally another tough sell.

anyway, back on subject. Guardians figures would be awesome. Modern Adam Warlock, Gamora, Phyla-Vell, Maybe a Nova Figure

I think Marvel would do better to take some of these movie idea to TV. Dr Strange would probably make a pretty cool TV show, but I don't see a movie working.

Maybe they'll do a kids movie, something kids dont identify with 30 year olds living in their aunts basement.
And I think this boards idea of mainstream is a little skewed.
