emberrassed/ashamed

Hey I decided to make a hopefully interisting little thread. Are you embarrassed or ashamed of collecting? Do others put you down for it?

I have always been a nerd and loved toys. I really don't care what other people think of me especially becouse I realize everyone has hobbies. Mine is no worse then any others and its far better then some. So yeah I have no issue being 23 thin and strollin down the toy isle. Hell Im even proud of my collection.

I have had my older sisters try to put me down and I had a friend who was very judgemental. I just really didn't care they were all screw ups in life anyway. Besides that most people think its neat cuz I probably have something that they are interisted in or its from something they like. I also have my full collection for all the world to see.

omega145 10-18-2011 03:34 PM

Fail on the spelling of embarrassed a couple of times....I gotta ask, how old are you?

Who cares? If people can go spend all types of money bar hopping, happy hour and getting $hit faced then why cant a person spend their money on collecting toys? Is it weird for people to collect stamps, baseball cards, figurines, or any other collectable? No....just do what makes you happy and F what anyone else says. Everyone in my family and all of my friends know that I collect and I could care less what they think. If they choose not to accept or understand it and then mock me for it then screw them, time to find someone else that can relate or appreciate what I do. My 2 cents for all its worth.

vampireheart 10-18-2011 03:56 PM

Yup im the same way, what makes it weird? But then again in high school I ws the kid who read comics and played video games and was thought of as "weird" to outsiders. Fast foreward 10+ years and now its cool to go to a comic book movie and play call of duty and madden. I say fuck it were 10 years ahead of everyone else, because it will one day be cool to outsiders of this community to do dios and collect toys. You shouldn't be ashamed of doing/collecting what you like.

D00MTR0N 10-18-2011 04:00 PM

hesitant, only because I dont feel like hearing the mindless drivel of some unevolved moron who thinks sports and women are the only thing our exsistence is for.

This ^^^ for the exact same reason,im in no way ashamed, but collecting toys/figures is even more frowned upon here (the UK) and i really dont see why i should waste my time justifying how i wanna spend my hard earned money and freetime to someone who doesnt get it,that may come across as a little arrogant or elitist, and maybe i am a little guilty of those traits, but i dont berate people who just wanna get drunk and sleep around,or obsess over the weekends soccer matches,so i dont see why i should be put under the microscope like some freak.....its bad enough i have to constantly defend my tastes in music and clothing to shallow people who cant see past a stereotype...but thats another story!!!

bmorr 10-18-2011 04:34 PM

my parents are cool with it, my dads a massive trekkie, watched it when it was NEW.
anyways, my friends are ok with it. although none of them collect.
ive never run into an issue where ive been embarrassed about it.

jamesmruddy 10-18-2011 04:36 PM

No not ashamed in anyway. My friends and family have no issues with it either. My children love it and they share the thrill of it with me. The only time I caught any flack for it was when I was over visiting some of my mother's relatives for some holiday and several of my Aunts started to rip into me about it and the need to grow up, etc, etc, etc... My Dad simply told them to stop, that I could be doing worse, selling/buying drugs like some people. That shut them up, lol.

Shin Densetsu 10-18-2011 04:41 PM

At the end of the day, even if you get put down for liking figures, you're still going to like them and the critics will do what they want, so why shouldn't you do what you want?

77kustoms 10-18-2011 04:44 PM

I never really cared what people thought of me. I do what makes me happy. Im 34, I have a beautiful wife and a smart as a whip 2 year old son and a hella awesome 6 week old daughter. I live for them and don't feel as though I need to justify my collections to anyone. No one should, its your thing.

hrothgars 10-18-2011 04:48 PM

Yeah, I don't have a lot of tolerance for negativity. I do get a little nervous when I bring a lady back to the apartment, but thankfully the majority are cool.

I don't expect to keep them forever, and they appreciate in value or at least retain value better than any savings account. :)

Haters gonna hate.

Fortune 10-18-2011 04:49 PM

Hmmm this is a slightly surprising turn out. Normally I end up being odd man out on forums for not being embarrassed

Boba Fettuccini 10-18-2011 05:27 PM

I'm not anymore. I got some guff about it in early highschool, but not any more. I decided to have some confidence about it. And people respect it if you don't let yourself think it's weird. It also helps to show some moderation, but it's not bad.

AndyCR75 10-18-2011 05:27 PM

I'll be totally honest. If you saw me, you may think I was the last person to collect figures. My appearence is my #1 priority. I get my brows waxed, I shave my torso, I go tanning, I'm like a mature guido from Jersey Shore. (With a Masters Degree and a nice job.) I work out, have a splendidly attractive girlfriend.

BUT

My dolls are the best freaking thing in my life!!! Holy crap in my office I have Star Wars, Death Scene Klytus, McFarlanes, PlayMakers (no Marvel, thats for my shrine at home.) I do not care. Its like if collecting figures was the equivalent to being homosexual, I would be Richard Simmons. I'm so out of the closet with my collecting its probably annoying to my co-workers/ friends.

Telling my assistant about the Compund Hulk all giddy yesterday? Yeah Im sure she was completely impressed. Or not.

Whatev fellas, no shame in this. And if someone says otherwise, kick them in their b@lls.

"Great dolls. Great hats!"
"Yup. Those are my dolls. And I got those tiny hats, at Tiny Hats."

D00MTR0N 10-18-2011 05:49 PM

stop calling them dolls man :P

BlackMagnus 10-18-2011 05:51 PM

M3T4L V1KING 10-18-2011 06:03 PM

I'm embarrassed and ashamed... OF PASSING ON MARVEL LEGENDS SASQUATCH AND MAESTRO AT TOYS R US ALL THOSE YEARS AGO! FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU--

thechris 10-18-2011 06:16 PM

Man, why are people so short on calling them dolls? Who cares. Don't put a stigma on it and it won't be a big deal. And who cares if people collect toys. Seriously, what do other people buy? I haven't got a clue. When I go to someone's house, they don't have anything at all. I work for my money just like the next guy, so why can't I spend it on what I want, especially when it's on something that isn't hurting me or someone else? I buy a toy, nobody is getting hurt. I buy 10 toys in a night and it won't kill my braincells or affect my liver or make me do something stupid... like drive impaired, sleep with some guy's wife, get a tramp stamp or... buy 10 more toys. LOL. Do I ever get embarrassed or feel shame? A little bit, when I've spent too much on them, what's too much? When I assign a limit and I exceed it. I feel like I'm letting myself down. Other than that, I feel a bit superficially ashamed/embarrassed when people put me in that position where I feel like I am. It's all psychological. Perhaps I should start calling people out on their infidelities and drug problems. See who's embarrassed then, ehhhh?

NBX Maverick 10-18-2011 06:26 PM

No I'm not ashamed! My sister sometimes teases me but I'm doing what makes me happy so that's what matters! My brother love my collecting and support me and my cousin I'd say him being a collector as well really make me more comfortable about it .

Did you even read his post, or just skim it for spelling mistakes?

Calling them "dolls" just reflects my comfort level with the whole thing, its meant to be taken lightly. And I totally agree, the only time I feel shame is when Ive gone overboard on spending, but that has nothing to do with the collecting itself.
