Do imperfections influence your purchases?
 

So I went to get something tonight and thought I would browse around while I'm at it... and I find a Young Justice Red Arrow 6" figure and although I already have one, I wouldn't mind having one to keep mint.

So I got it and then look at it and find that there were blemishes and smudges on the paint job on the hair. I literally stood there for like a good 10 minutes before I decided to put it down, then I went to get the things i needed...

next thing you know I turned around and got the figure anyways, figuring I could return it later if it really bothered me, but I still wanted it for some reason lol :(

So I'm curious do you guys let the minor imperfections deter you from buying? Does it influence your purchase in any way? Cause I know there's a lot of figures with bad paint jobs out there in all toylines... lol

I am a sucker for that. I don't mind imperfections somewhere on the costume, but if the face is fucked, then RETURN RETURN RETURN.

I am anal about it. Sometimes I will let it slide but its rare indeed. My brother is the same way except I have watch him judge a figure he REALLY wanted for 20 minutes before deceding to put it down cuz his teeth were misspainted

I mainly care about facial imperfections, issues with logos (like if there was a gob of paint on Superman's S), or like the crappy Power Man/Iron Fist pack I got where the strings on his shirt weren't painted, like at all. They were left brown skin colour. Wow.

I'm not that analytical. I rarely see any with bad facial mistakes, and the only time i've ever had an error bad enough to want to fix was a lack of color on an IM2 comic figure's leg. No gold. so i just fixed it.

Anything on the face equals DO NOT BUY.

Even if its the only one on the peg, with a slim chance of ever finding it again.

I'll pace up and down the aisle, trying to think if its worth it or not.

Other than that, I just watch out for the standard stuff like doubled limbs or anything put on wrong.

I've started looking at figures more carefully when I buy them because of imperfections on the paint job/mold... I was at Auto Assembly a couple of months ago, and literally turned down buying United Megatron because the paint was off on his chest.

I don't regret it though, because I feel the imperfection really devalued it. If I had brought it, all I would have noticed on it is the bad paint job, and that would have ruined it for me!

I dont see how it wouldnt. It would depend on how bad it is but of course it should matter to a certain extent if your any type of intelligent buyer. Would you buy a shirt that was the wrong color in certain spots?

It only matters on the head. If paint apps are off on the head I won't buy. Otherwise if one the rest of body I usually don't care too much.

I actually love imperfections. I like everything I buy to look like shit.

I too think the answer is obvious, but like xhavoc86, TheLoudMaster, and Fortune's brother, I usually find myself hemming and hawing in the aisle for 10 minutes before I put a figure back on the shelf. Ultimately, if it isn't a simple over-stroke that can easily be scratched off of the undercoat/mold, I put them back and wait until I can find one with better paint apps.

The funniest ones are facial screwups. I remember reading a review of DCSH Superman and the reviewer had three, one perfect, the other two with eyebrows in the wrong places and severely crossed-eyes.

I am not a stickler but do want acceptable paint especialy face. I almost grabbed an X-23 at Target got to checking the paint (overlookeed the warpewd as hell claws) and there was red all over the face. I bought a good one off the forum later that day and told the guy about bloody nose variant I found :).

Yes, definitely. I look for the figures that have flaws and imperfections and buy them specifically. I find they have more character and convey an additional sense of humanity. It's got more of a rustic old fashioned quality that I wish all of my toys would carry. Plus, I'm convinced that more human labour went into the making of said toy, know what I mean? When I order toys online, I don't know exactly what I'm getting. Sometimes that annoys me because I get a figure and it's totally messed up. You wouldn't think it would be this bad but it's seriously making me consider only buying retail. At least with the ones that I really care about. Confusing? I agree. Indeed.

Paint apps def have an effect on my decision to purchase a fig. Poor MU paint apps are what keeps me from ordering them online. I can say that I think they have gotten better but I still do not want to take the chance. I love finding multiples and picking out the best one.

Poor paint apps on faces can ruin a fig to me. If it can be fixed easily i will consider it but I have seen some effed up paint washes and over sprays in my day. 2 pack Cyclops, Capt Britian, and Darkhawk all come to mind whan I think about poor paint.

Paint apps matter to me. I go through the whole peg(if doable) and pick the best one. If there is only one I pick it up. And if I find a better one later on I'll grab it and return the bad paint app one.

Depends on the imperfection and how noticeable it is.

I try not to agonize too much over it, but if there's something really wrong, then I'll pass on it.

I'll sit there in the aisle and go through the different ones on the pegs (assuming there are multiples of the one I want) and go over them for pick of litter. Paint apps, stress marks, you name it.

Same here, though I'm more concerned about the head than the rest of the toy (unless the flaw compromises its functionality).

I do the pick of the litter thing too if there is more than 1 on shelves. If I'm paying full price for it in store, I better be getting top quality for my buck. It's the only thing I don't like about buying online.

Indeed ... i have spent more then a few minutes debating which fig had the better appearence ... my last big debate was over a Namors eyebrows! lol

I know exactly what your talking about and have made conscious decisions in the past to curb this type of behavior.

I definitely take my time to look at all the figs on the pegs and pick the ones with the best paint apps and least damaged card. As others have mentioned, the most important area for paint aps is the face.
