They give us an early look at what's to come, sometimes the prototypes seen via auction are from the actual production molds as opposed to those shown at shows, so sometimes they give us a better idea of what to expect at retail.

Somethings are cut, and an early prototype is an easy indicator of how a toy was originally meant to be.
