SOPA Bill
Guys and mostly the system admins here, take a look at this:
SOPA STRIKE - Largest online protest in history - January 18 - blackout your site Probably many of you know that sites like this one could get really affected because of this bill. Please support the blackout against this awful law that dimishes our freedom. For those that do not know what this is: SOPA Explained: Why It I know probably politics are not allowed here, but I think this will affect us all worldwide. Please fellow northamericans, it is in your hands to stop this violation! p.s. Why, why, marvel are you supporting this bill?!!!!! |
well aware of Sopa. its a crap bill, but because of events from the past 2 weeks, its pretty much dead. the negative backlash has grown hot, the white house has said it would never pass somthing that does specifically what sopa does, and the senate said it would never vote on it unless there was some kind of consensus, which is what Lamar Smith has fought tooth and nail against because he wants it out now.
as its negative popularity continues to grow in an avalanche, I'm certain it will fail. But it takes good people who will not let corporate greed control their government to stand up and fight. I myself have sent a few letters and phone calls to my reps and more. You need to do the same. and metalalchemist, Marvel has always been anti creativity from outside sources. they sued the hell out of City of Heroes for it and lost. I'm pretty sure they would sue Crayola just for being able to draw their characters. and DC supports it too. while the different divisions of disney support it seperatly(except Pixar), DC supports it under WB's blanket support. |
I have signed petitions where I could, remember I do not have a representative as I am not from the United States, but I am pretty aware, that if they F@#! you guys up, they will do it to us too!
Let's hope they do what they are saying, unfortunately many politics say something and do the opposite. |
It isn't going to pass. If it does...we will all die. Besides, is this only an American Law? How would it effect Canada? I know our Prime Minister won't even consider a bill like this.
|
This is one of those bills that pops up every couple years, riles people up, and gets shot down due to the idiocy involved.

Funny that no one remembers we went through this two or three years ago. It's no less disturbing, though, that we keep having to go through this. Exactly why the "Money= Free Speech" and "Corporations are People" ammendments are the worst things to kappen to this country. But at least it's not the Orphan Works bill. |
booooo! stop sopa lol
|
Well aware of SOPA and PIPA and am thoroughly against both, as are most (if not all) of the staff of the 2005 networks. You may have seen some of their avatars/sigs change as of late.
Based on some news reports I've seen recently, both bills are in serious trouble right now and with SOPA, three of its creators want their names removed from the bill due to the backlash. Quote:

Well from what I know, Canada has been trying to do this too for awhile, but our Prime Minister has the final word and makes sure it doesn't go through. He must download tons of movies.

And that not taking in account all the U.S sites that could be closed and because of that, unavailable to us, international users. |

It's a US bill as is PIPA (both are bad, and don't forget either one!), but if they somehow manage to pass in a fly by night act, other countries could follow suit. Once america, the alleged land of the free, passes a bill other countries sometimes take it as precedent to do the same. Plus USA tends to put pressure on other nations to do similiar sometimes via sanctions.
Yeah, as minimal impact as my blog has, it went black yesterday too. I've been keeping a close eye on these bills since it could mean the end of a lot of things. While it's built to target piracy, the reach is too wide sweeping and could harm all fansites. I've got things in place for my own protection just in case, but I'm not comfortable with using them. A good example of why even toyark could be harmed are sig pics, and the photos of characters even if they are figures of characters. That's how overstepping this bill is. Cosplay sites are also screwed. Marvel as a corporate entity supports it, but on the creative level I think you'd be surprised with who doesn't. There are a lot of... Internet addicts... within various companies. Many of the creatives are as much geeks as us. Some even hide in plain sight. Like Wacker who likes to troll 4chan. |
