Gigantic Battles Goliath WTF?! WARNING!

So I stumbled upon the Gigantic Battles Marvel Universe sets today. KICK ASS right? YES! Halfway...

My Skrull and Cap turned out fine, always wanted a "New" Cap, because Brubaker is=WIN and Bucky Cap is actually quite awesome. The Skrull and Goliath use detented joints all over the place, which is the norm for Hasbro ML figures and I like it(a lot less joint looseness this way).

Then I opened Goliath...Iron Man turned out fine(wow he's pale..wasn't expecting that...), but GOLIATH! WTF?! His hips would NOT FREAKING BUDGE WHATSOEVER!

After 20 min of trying to get them to freaking move(bear in mind, though I hate stuck joints and have had breakages, I have also had success freeing them before), the right hip SNAPS THE $%^&* OFF!

O F F!

So the next few minutes resulted in the following phrases:

#$%^&*()_$%^&*()%^&%%F^YT(G()G(&^%%)&(&^)(&()&()&% $$(&@@@121@!!!!!!!!!!!!1!1!1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thankfully I was able to get an exchange at Walmart. So I open the next set. BAM STUCK HIPS AGAIN!

WHYYY GOODDD WHYYYY???????????!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL jp.

Anyways

T W O HOURS LATER

I finally free the hips(which was about a few minutes ago to be exact). I tried the following:
  • Heating up the hips with a blow dryer
  • Shoving Goliath in the freezer for almost a damn hour
  • Shoving a knife between the hip discs
All of the following DID NOT WORK by themselves. In the last half of that 2 hour session to liberate those damn hips, I ended up heating up the hips with a hair dryer and trying to pry the discs a little apart to free them from being stuck. My suspicion was that the yellow paint dried up in between the joints, hence why I shoved a knife in there. Since the plastic was a bit softer due to the heat, the knife went in easier.

So after heating the thing up, shoving a knife in, and continually working the joints, the HIPS WERE FINALLY UNSTUCK AND FREED!

So take this as a warning for ANY of you who buy Goliath! Be careful with them hips!

*I have the blue/yellow version, I have no idea if the red/blue one has the same issues, it might depend on whether or not there is paint around the hip joints*

man hasbro ruined the ICONS IMO, and they use this SAME body for everything, my magneto and cyclops were the same as well as both my goliath and skrull, ALL frozen hips

Frozen hips FOR THE LOSE! EPIC LOSE!

My Skrull turned out alright surprisingly. Hips were nowhere near as hard to move.

Guess I'm not the only one with issues with how stiff the limbs are.

I like it stiff to an extent so he keeps poses, but posing him is a pain in the butt since I don't want to break him. And I have the red blue one. Even his knees are stiff as all heck, and already starting to show stress marks above the knees from trying to bend them.

If it helps for anyone, when I have problems with my DCUC in terms of stuck joints, I boil the kettle, hold the problem area over the spout until it boils, free the joint, then either dip in a bowl of ice water, or run under cold tap water to get the plastic hard again. Works almost every time. Proceed with caution however, not 100% guarantee (my one-armed deathstroke can attest to that).

It's a shitty deal all the way around. Glad you got them freed up without breaking the second one dude!

Greenskar 11-04-2009 02:59 PM

Wow. Glad I passed on the Iron Man/Goliath pack. My Giant Skrull works just fine at the hips and everywhere else. The Bucky Cap was MORE than worth the price of the pack, IMO.

That method works, and thanks for posting it, but for the Goliath hips they are different joints entirely. They are basically ball joints inserted at a 45 degree angle, with a peg inserted into the thigh which acts as a thigh swivel. If they were like the DCUC joints I think they'd be a lot easier to free. The Goliath hips have detents as well which are fine when working right but on mine they were plain frozen stuck.

Right now, I'm really only considering the Skrull/Cap set, so I guess it's good to hear that it is the one with the least amount of issues. Hopefully this is just a mark of the initial product run and that future runs will have corrected the issue.

My captain america fig has a stuck knee joint, help?

MasterSock 09-14-2011 10:54 PM

My Goliath also broke at the hip :( but i just hot glue that bitch still pissed that it snapped and you cant even repair without breaking the ball joint >.< . Red Goliath poses just fine!

behindthemask 09-14-2011 11:16 PM

In the process of trading for 1, hope when it comes it's fine although I may leave him MOC... I'll figure it out.

rodimus15 09-14-2011 11:24 PM

My skrull goliath is the same way! im afraid if i try anything its ganna break off.

Boba Fettuccini 09-14-2011 11:38 PM

Hot glue worked for you? I can't get that stuff to bond plastic for anything..

That's pretty much what I would do. I've never had a larger fig like that freeze up though. Usually just the 4 inch guys and just with that Wolverine Origins style hip socket. I am always weary of posing action figures when I get them in the mail. You never know what conditions they suffered on the way to there final destination.

Goliath is in a nice shape box. You're gonna have a hard time deciding to open it. lol Keep me posted on when you can ship.

I had the same problem with mine. After about 5 minutes I threw him on the floor and went to bed. He remains there to this day.

quinten182 09-15-2011 06:54 AM

I've had stuck joints that I just forced through and have luckily (knock on wood) never had a break. However, archangel's wings made me throw things across the room. There was no possible way they would fit. I had to take a knife to the hole.

MegsTriggerMan 09-15-2011 07:33 AM

I always have bad luck with wrists ... I have had a few snap ... for them i usually use a needle to reconnect and then i still have swivel ability

DogFashionDisco 09-15-2011 12:57 PM

Worst case scenario, if you're not too attached to the figure that breaks or you think you can find another one, contact Hasbro about it and they will replace it for you with a figure of equal value.

joemama13 09-18-2011 07:34 AM

Get an exchange if bad qc things happen.

Redlantern161 10-03-2011 06:50 AM

I had this same issue with my MU Cable but I took it upon myself to get it fixed so I wouldn't feel like me beating the scalpers to him was a total fail lol *flips the bird to scalpers*

thechris 10-03-2011 07:10 AM

When it comes to those icon sized figures, I had the frozen hip joint on my 2 Hank Pym Goliaths, Skrull Giantman and Black Goliath. I took the strong arm approach and just twisted it until it finally budged. I've heard horror stories of the waist joint snapping but to be honest, that piece is thick, so if it snaps, you had a weak waist joint on the figure to begin with. Not that it's any consolation if your Goliath became a two piece. "Battle Damage Edition!" LOL.

Haven't had a piece snap yet.
