Yep that's the number. The number of all the comic issues that came out in 1969 (not including foreign price variants). I have decided I am going to try and get them all. Yes I know I will have to buy issues of Our Love, My Romance, Chili, Millie the Model and Mad About Millie. And there a few other titles in their too that is not my normal fare but hey I have to have some kind of goal. I am not right now listing all of the books because it is late but I will get them on.

Right now I have 8 books Avengers 60, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 68, 69 in my house I have three more issues on the way Sub Mariner 19 (1st Stingray) Hulk 121 and Doctor Strange 171.

This will take some time and I believe it will be fun so I am ready to go.

Those are the books and I have Hulk 121 on the way along witrh Submariner 19. I got Doc Strange 171 but I meant to pick up 176 so I screwed myself. Received

But those are not going to be the hardest that is going to be : Eye Magazine with the Amazing Spider-Man promo 0

I have never even heard of Eye Magazine and it is no where on ebay, going to be hard to find.

Some of those are gonna be tough- others fairly easy but expensive.

Personally, I'd hit a comics show/con, wait till the last day and maybe till an hour or so before closing- wait till the victim....er...classic comics dealer is getting ready o pack it in and make your move.

Whatever the listed price is, knock 25-30% off as the maximun you'll pay for it- at a convention, (as a dealer) you either do well or the whole thing is a total wash- at a dead show- one with low attendence or where a gues does not show or whatever, dealers just want to sell books to make it worth their time- they never pay more than half what a book is worth when they buy collections (usually much much less) so you're not screwing them buy offering much less than they're asking.

They'll play hurt, but if you're prepared to walk away from the sale, they'll haggle with you.

Again, the smaller the show, the better your chances.

Also, the Millie the Model original art is up on ebay all the time- I think the artist from back them still has all of the art and needs the dough in his golden years- could be fun to have a piece to show.

in todays market that a TINY number. Then i saw it was only marvel books. any why are you focusing on 1969 books? so many questions.

After that I am going to 1968, my plan is to get all of the 60's one year at a time. I figure it will be easier too. If I have so many then it will be hard to get a grip on where to go. I have picked up three today FF 90 & 92 and Daredevil 55. With the five on the way that will give me 16 down. Only 223 left.


The worst one to get will be Eye Magazine with the Spider-man promo. I couldn't find a single of it on ebay at all. Going to sweat that later.

Why not focus on 1 line at a time that way you'll have complete sets, plus why everything made in the 60's rather then just the lines you want. That's like me buying barbies,hot wheels, transformers and nerf guns all because they're made the same year... just sounds weird. good luck on the early ironman,spiderman and avengers $$$

That's not as crazy as it sounds. There are plenty of collectors who collect based on year or era. Antique collectors for example may only collect from certain decades or centuries. Some people will only collect toys from a certain era like the 1980s. Some people only like the Jim Lee era of X-Men. He's clearly archiving from that decade and may have a fondness for the period. Possibly because he began collecting in that era or his first comic book was from the '60s or he fell in love with that comic decade. Some people dress '80s, collect '80s movie, '80s albums, '80s toys and boardgames and drive an '80s car. There was a period not that long ago where every douchebag dressed like they were from the '70s with aviator glasses, flowery shirts, tight jeans and claimed to be a hippie. Personally, I'm mainly a fan of comics from the mid-90s and earlier with a few exceptions like Identity Crisis. I love the Golden Age DC heroes and Silver Age DC was a blast, too. For me, DC and Marvel were both pretty neck in neck storywise up until the 90s where Marvel started to push ahead a little with epic stories like Maximum Carnage, Lifetheft and other winning Spidey tales.

Yes, I started buying in the 80's but I love the sixties stories. Each book is a bit of history. When I get them I read it all ads and everything. It is almost like speaking to the past. Yes I am buying other things at the same time. I am trying to get the complete Avengers because that was my first love and I have a new fix of Journey into Mystery. If I see an issue I need and have the extra cash I will gobble them up. I had thought to do 1970 first, the year I was born, but somehow (and this sounds silly I know) it doesn't seem to gleam like the others do. I know it might take me a year or two to find and buy all of these but I have time. After that its '68 and I have a couple issues from there and if any of the '69 book have stories that start there (or if it ends in '70) then I will get those books too.


And part of my first real fix besides the books I had.

Me too, I love the ads. Back then all kinds of people wanted to make your poems into songs or sell you stamps. Funny stuff.

Don't forget the chameleons they claimed would change colour and even patterns to camouflage themselves even on checkered clothing and they used to them give away for free if you bought meal worms and the X-Ray specs with the dude looking at a woman and dotted lines used to trace her dress to show that he can see through her clothes. I believe the chameleon promised that the chameleon and meal worms would arrive alive or your money back.

And don't forget the seas monkeys and 6ft long Polaris subs

That and those sell stationary door to door to get amazing prizes ads featuring Captain Cash or whatever. "Sally the Operator is Waiting to Take Your Call!"

I can not tell you the heatbreak of seeing thousand dollar silver age comics perfect except for some Grit coupon having been cut out of a page.
ALWAYS flip through every page of any classic comic you buy!

Or the Marvel Subscription coupon- lotta great comics ruined from that crap- it was always on a story facing page too!

I miss some of the ads- the "1000 army men" thing was a real deal- you could get a giant box of army men for like twenty bucks- I see them at flea markets occasionally.
Sea Monkeys were just brine shrimp.
Switchblade combs got banned.
Those magic kits seemed pretty awful- same with the "6' long rubber snake!" or the classic Mego superheros ads with really crappy drawings instead of photos...


But for real fun, check the inevitible two page yellow Mile High Comics ad in any 80's Marvel comic- the prices on some books....fifty whole dollars for Giant Size X-Men #1?!?

You are right Jason some of that stuff really messed up books. The Journey I bought today has an ad to get an RCA radio for $19.95 right on the inside of the front cover with a coupon. I shudder to think of how many of those books felt the scissors.

I will the ads these days were so fun, they seem boring and uninteresting now. Much more flavor, is not a bit sad.

Just sold a couple figs to a friend a bit ago and going to get Hulk 120 for my run later today. 121 is on its way and it will be nice to get the feelings of a storyline. That is the hardest part of this is I can not be sure where every story is but buying multiple titles gives me a bigger picture of the state of the company and a larger sample of what they have.

Of course it will be nice to have three or four in a row.

Don't forget the ones where people treat the comic catalogues as checklists and mark them up with pen. LOL. Or the Brach's Rocks, Nestle Quick, Hubba Bubba, Captain Crunch Cereal and Capri Sun Juice Box ads featuring word search, word scramble, connect the dots, maze escapes and all manner of puzzles that would entice any 5 year old (or a 5 year old at heart) with OCD and idle hands to complete.

Better still from our perspective, you can see the first ads for 3.75 GI Joe and the original secret wars line (which was downright embarassing if you like Doom in any way).
plus ads for old cartoons- I recall seeing ads for the Power of the Go Bots and even as a little kid, thinking "these are crappy transformers rip offs!"

Reading old 60's comics is fun because they are SO casually dismissive of women...and when they write black peple, they always have some chip on their shoulder.
I dont think a single minority worked in comics back then...and if they did, they sure as hell were not writing!

For me, I loved the old Lary Hama GI Joe comic book- with amazing Mike Zeck covers!
Marvel ran a lot of ads for that #1 as I recall.

Well, either the majority of them actually did have a chip on their shoulder back then (And watching historical documentaries, I could understand why), or that's just a *really persistant* bad stereotype, because even togday they *still* usually write black folk that way in 60s period pieces.
Probably a bit of both, with a heavy leaning towards the latter.

Good points but I mean, whenever a black man was shown he was pointing a finger with some bullshit "what have yuu done for me?" accuzation.
Most famous of this was in Green Lantern/Green Arrow when a old man points at green Lantern and say "You helped the green man and you helped the white man but what have you done for the black man?" and GL for some reason just looks ashamed and speechless instead of saying "look around dumbass- everything on Earth would be GONE if not for me!"

Same with the Falcon some guy would always be accusing him of selling out because he was cap's partner...and Falcon was a GREAT character for a long time because he was this guy always doing the right thing while taking flack from both sides.
Then the writes changed and they made (I kid you not) a retcon wherein Sam Wilson was an unwitting pawn of the Red Skull, who had used the Cosmic Cube to take the most stereotypical 60's pimp (Snap Wilson) and forcibly make him into moral and great guy ('cause he could not find an already moral and patriotic black guy to brainwash or something), knowing Cap would make him his partner and then he'd betray him.

Really...they made him into a super scumbag that was only an upright (black) citizen because a freakin Nazi had made him that way as a trap for the all-American hero (himself the aryan ideal of blonde hair and blue eyes).
The moral seemed to be that anyone can change- with enough cosmic reality-altering manipulation.

Yeah...Marvel was utterly clueless back then everywhere except on Spider Man which kicked crazy ass in the 60's and 70's- violence, murder, drug abuse, poverty and racism were all explored there in a way that still reads well today.
And all that was just from Aunt May.

wow this sounds like a lot of fun, and in today's market, probably won't cost as much as you think, especially if you aren't too fussy on condition and stay away from CGC stuff.

That Eye Magazine shouldn't be too tough if you're patient online, and/or ask around. Flea market dudes or horror magazine guys are your best bets.

A quick ebay search looks like it might have been a pin-up mag so maybe some vintage erotica shops would be a good place to start.

There was once a clipping service/8x10 photo shop/old newspaper shop in New York City I went to once in a search for some Kirby daily strips, but I can't remember the name, and that was in the ancient year of 1994. It was in midtown on the east side. They mostly sold old 8x10 headshots of celebs for newspaper stories, but had a service where they could get you any newspaper you wanted no matter how obscure.

Worse- Ace and Ace II- two (annuals) years in a row, Marvel shamed itself by making a "street character" that was a cross between Michael Jackson and Prince...and having him kick Spider-Man's ass.
