Miscasting?

One of the biggest complaints fans can have with an adaptation comes in the form of miscasting. Casting choices really can make or break a movie, especially with the hardcore fans.

What movies do you think were hurt in the longrun by poor casting choices, and what actors/actresses do you feel would have been much better?

I'll start off with Green Lantern, Starring Ryan Renolds and Blake Lively as Jordan and Ferris.
Renolds, I do not hate him as much as other fans do. I don't think he's a bad actor, and in the correct roll he's pretty brilliant (Accurate Deadpool, anyone?). I just don't think he's a very good choice for Hal Jordan (I'd have had no complaints at all were he cast as Kyle Rayner).
Lively on the flip side, also doesn't annoy me nearly as badly as others. However, she's still not a great choice. There are other actresses which fit the part, and are much better at their craft.

My choices-
Hal Jordan: Nathan Fillion. Best known from his work Mal on Firefly, to me he's like Patrick Stewart to Professor X. There really is no other choice.
Carrol Ferris/Star Sapphire: Lake Bell. She'd be best known here as the lead actress in NBC's Surface. I remembered her from recently rewatching it on DVD, and realized she'd have been a brilliant choice for Ferris/Sapphire.

Lake Bell was what put the idea of this thread in my head, and after thinking about it, I'd love to hear what others come up with for not just GL, but all the TV and Movie adaptations out there.
Makes me wonder who feels whom was miscast, and if there are indeed better choices.

I think one of the great miscasts of all time but didn't effect the movie very much was Maggie Gylenhal as Rachel in The Dark Knight. I mean who looked at her and said "Shes perfect for the beautiful Rachel who is billionaire playboy Bruce Waynes obsession." I cringed when Heath Ledger was like "well hello beautiful"

snake5289 02-19-2012 01:20 PM

Nic Cage as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider. One of my favorite comic characters ever and he's the wrong choice in every way possible. My pick would be Karl Urban. He could pull off a great blend of humor, broodiness, and badassary imo.

Dude seriously??? she's smoking HOT!!!!! And she has brains, shes not just some airbrushed vacuous Hollywood underwear model.......that would be Blake Lively..BADDA-BOOM!!! Hehheh!!!

snake5289 02-19-2012 01:27 PM

As for GL Fillion is obviously the perfect choice but as an alternate choice I'd go with David Boreanaz. Thought he was great as Hal in New Frontier.

bmorr 02-19-2012 01:31 PM

i honestly dont have a clue who i would choose to play hal, i just dont know enough about the character.

howevor, id absolutly kill to see clint eastwood play batman beyond era bruce wayne.
second place is Brian Dennehy

snake5289 02-19-2012 01:39 PM

Awesome. I was thinking Michael Keaton but that'd probably be better. Can't think of anyone to play Terry though.

bmorr 02-19-2012 01:51 PM

heres an article i found on this exact topic:

FAN CAST: Batman Beyond

snake5289 02-19-2012 01:59 PM

Nice. I like the majority of those choices. And you have to put Mad Stan in the movie.

Both those are really great. Brian Dennehy gets forgotten about in our kind of circle a lot. He's such a great character actor.

I think both Sue Storm, and especially Dr Doom were hugely miscast for F4.
But I really can't think of anyone else to play them. Anytime I try, I draw a blank.
When she was younger, Meg Ryan would have been a decent Sue.

snake5289 02-19-2012 05:53 PM

Jason Issacs as Dr. Doom.

I can see him. He'd be a hell of a lot better than the guy they got. Doom is not sassy.

bmorr 02-19-2012 06:34 PM

found another article from 2009, at one point vin diesel and jason stathom wanted to play namor:

EXCLUSIVE: Vin Diesel Interested in Playing Doctor Doom, Has Discussed Namor/Sub-Mariner Movie

snake5289 02-19-2012 06:54 PM

Oookay. Little out there but intriguing nonetheless.

bmorr 02-19-2012 07:12 PM

i got it! Micheal C. Hall for Doctor Doom! Micheal plays the main character on Dexter.

To be fair, the Joker's sense o beauty is insane...as is anyone thinking she's beautiful.
Still, she's SO much better than the stilted, wooden performance of the woman (forget her name) from the first movie...everyone raves about that folm, but she nearly blew it for me.

kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane...she was okay in the part I guess, but that sure was no relation to the MJ from the comics- not in any way.

bmorr 02-19-2012 07:32 PM

kirsten dunst was mary jane. katy holmes was in the first batman.

Crazy Jetty 02-19-2012 07:46 PM

I think one of the difficulties is that odd thing that's really hard to describe, known as presence.
Certain actors just have this... presence... about them. And it gets really difficult with casting female characters because there's far fewer actresses who have a presence about them. Does that mean they're bad actors? Not nessisarily.

As an example... Sigourney Weaver most definately has presence. You know she's around. You know she's there, and you just respect her for simply being there. There's just something... powerful... about her. Flip over to someone like Jennifer Aniston... she just does not convey that kind of air about her.
The problem comes in with a lot of female comic characters *do* have a presence. People like Wonder Woman, or Invisible Woman. When they burst through a wall and beat the badguy, you're supossed to feel every bit as confident and safe with them as though it were Superman, or Captain America. Even when they aren't, you would just feel like you're safe in their presence.
That's *very* difficult to find in male actors. It's almost impossible to find in female.

And that's a big part of why Jessica Alba fails as Sue Storm. To me, she just does not carry that same kind of presence that her character has. It isn't so much that I feel she did a bad job as Sue. Just was a mismatch.

Back in the day, Sigourney Weaver would have made one hell of a superhero, or villain. She'd have been the ultimate Star Sapphire.

trebleshot 02-20-2012 11:00 AM

Sometimes it's not so much the cast, but the director who doesn't work. Ang Lee and Hulk. Brett Ratner and X3.

Joel Schumacher.

Speaking of, that reminds me of a few on-topic suggestions: Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze and Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl.

bmorr 02-20-2012 11:06 AM

lets not talk about that travesty.

hugo weaving would COMPLETLY OWN as mr freeze. he sounds just like the voise actor from TAS.

I absolutely love Jessica Alba, but she was absolutely wrong for Sue. I think Naomi Watts would have been a far better choice. Attractive, but more mature and has the qualities necessary for the mother figure of Marvel's first family.

KingLouie731 02-20-2012 11:53 AM

I think the cat who played Tuvok on ST: Voyager would have been a really awesome choice if they did a JL movie with John Stewart

bmorr 02-20-2012 11:56 AM

or mister terrific.

TheSymbiote 02-20-2012 01:10 PM

Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake. we do not want that to happen.
we would rather see Nathan Fillion playing drake or hell we would rather see Nolan North playing Drake.

bmorr 02-20-2012 01:37 PM

who's nathon drake
