To all you Comic Book Readers/Collectors!
With the passing of ToyFair 2012. I had noticed with the pictures that were uploaded of the Marvel Universe Display that they has used a HUGE photo to cover their slatwall.
After seeing that it got me thinking, since I keep my collection up on slatwall maybe I could do the same thing.. Looked into it... way too expensive, or at least not the price I am looking to pay. What does this have to do with comics you ask.. Well. I thought of another idea. If any of you have seen my Collection forum I had done a poll about painting my room. Well my new idea is... I would like to cut up pages of comics, and them glueing them on to the slatwall thus making it 1 big wall size comic book. My shelfs would then still fit in the slats, and I could place my collection on top of that. I think it would look very busy, but sick at the same time! So it all boils down to... To all you Comic Book Readers/Collectors, would you be upset with me cutting comics up like that? |
Not if it's to do what you're planning. Sounds pretty cool.
|
Go for it man, that would be freaking awesome. :)
|
Your comics, your wall, your decision.
If that's what you want to do, then go for it. But I expect pics to be posted here when you're done. ;) |
ar eyou gonna cut off just the covers or slice up an entire issue to cover this wall? Do you have pics of the wall itself? or just buy the 5 dollar poster they used which is available at every wal mart(i noticed they updated a few things) or plow through some printer ink to rasterize the poster so its large enough to fit the space your working on. Your individual page idea is gonna be tedious as hell though. Hope your really anal about cutting lol.

Comics aren't worth what they used to be nor will they ever be worth as much again so yeah cut them bad boys up. A cheaper alternative though would be to use the marvel previews that are a buck a piece or just raid the $1 bins at your LCS, im sure they'd appreciate the business :)

Ok I have mixed feeling about this. I think it is a great idea and would look good. Like Trebleshot says take pics and share them so we can all see. On the other hand the inner collector says please don't use Silver Age books as it is a very small pool to begin with and it would make them smaller BUT if you do decided to do this I might be able to give you a website that sells comics and at the same time displays the covers of most books so you can see for yourself. And if you are going to do this, and I shudder to give you this, some old Avengers have great covers. Right off the top of my head I would say Avengers 51, 57, 61, 62, 69 among others. 72 is nice and I like 76. A lot of the Amazing Spider-man from the sixties had great covers too.
Of course there are some good bronze age books in the Avengers from about 112 on with lots of good stories and the FF were no slouch either and of course check Spider-Man. Hope it helps. |
use something from the 80s on because of the increased variety of color palettes.

I say use the reprints they packaged with the MU 2 Packs. Great art, rich colors, great history, thick paper, and worthless (from a collector's point of view).
|
I totally agree with the above last two statements.

As for the comics I could use, the 2 pack comics are a good idea... only things is.. I am a MOC collector... I own 1 that is open the rest are all MOC... lol... A part of me does feel bad about cutting comics up and basicly distroying them to make... art... lol.. example if I bought a small lot of comics off of someone on ebay, cut them up and glue them to my wall, then post pictures on here. then somehow that person comes accross the pics and be like "MY OLD COMICS WERE USED FOR THAT!! Noooo!!" then the guy goes and jumps off a bridge.. lol |
See if you can find something with Kirby reprints or Ditko stuff. Marvel Tales had a lot of that and because it was reprints should be cheap. Also X-Men Classics was a reprint book and again shouldn't cost much.

OH MY GOD! I don't think I could bring myself to ever do this and yet it is a cool idea so good luck and please post pics ;)
As far as advice goes, check the dollar tree I know recently I have run across some little 3 packs of comics they are selling and each has a Marvel, a DC and either another of those 2 or Darkhorse/Image and it would def save on money and ruining your stash |

As long as you enjoy them, it doesn't matter how you do so. :) |
roadrevenge, while it is completely your decision what to do with your comics, I hope I haven't caught you too late to make another suggestion. Whenever I visit my local comic book shop, I constantly grab whatever freebies they have out. This ranges from full comics, to mini-posters, to smaller promo-cards but there is a TON of this stuff and it's all free. Also, it usually features some pretty great art because it's meant to be promotional. Free comic book day is right around the corner if you want to stock up then, but I'm betting your local shop has plenty of extra leftovers to go around. I was thinking about making a collage from all of the pieces I collected eventually.
Anyway, just an idea as an alternative to sacrificing your comics. |

I know there was a bar in the 90's in NYC that had tabletops with a similar idea. Go for it and please post pictures! PLEASE!!! |

Go to your LCS and get coverless issues for a like a quater from their junk bin and use those...or just scan what you want and make a collage in Photoshop, then print it out.

maybe
i have a fat stack of old beat up comics that are all moldy an messed up that i was kind of planing on doing the same thing. i'd say as long as said comics you were cutting up were already messed up as comics can get, then yea go ahead i want to see pictures for sure. but if there fairly new an still in good shape i couldn't see myself cutting up good comics. i also had the idea to use photoshop an make like 4 ft by 6ft posters an scan all the posters in at real size an rearrange them to fit. the printing would cost a lot unless you knew a printer like i do, but at the same time you could cut them up an do what ever with them because there all scanned images.
