guess it should've been obvious....i mean most of the marvel movies take inspiration from the Ultimate Universe...so why not the ultimate variant of the skrulls...

are they really skrulls but thats just what the asgardians call them?

they specifically said chitauri. probably a separate race. no one shapeshifted in the film(unless it turns out coulson was a skrull all along).

Just because they didn't shapeshift in this movie doesn't mean they can't. Who's to say that when their master (everyone who has seen it knows who) shows up in the sequel he brings more with him and they shapeshift then. I'm just saying don't rule it out yet.

In the Ultimate universe the Chitarui are what they called the Skrulls at first. When 616 looking Skrulls showed up they said that the Chitauri were a rouge tribe that went from planet to planet using up the resources. I think using Chitauri was just a work around as the alien in space had a very Skrull looking chin even if they didn't show his face.

If they are working with Thanos in Avengers 2 I imagine we would get some shape-shifting spies infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. or something.
