Transformers vs Star Wars - Round 1
http://i.imgur.com/EsRxQ.jpg
Transformers Overview Produced by Hasbro, the original Transformers line of toys, now dubbed Generation 1, ran from 1984 all the way through 1990. It consisted of hundreds of different toys during that era and is the foundation upon which all future Transformers series were built. The original figures were comprised of toys culled from Takara's various Japanese transforming robot lines from the 1970's, such as Diaclone and Microman. Eventually, Hasbro would incorporate designs from a few other, non-Takara toy lines and then move into completely original designs. Even to this day, new and old fans alike still compare the current toys to the originals, be it for it's design, originality or representation of the classic character it purports to be. http://i.imgur.com/gc9tz.jpg Star Wars Overview Star Wars, as a toy line, began it's life in the very late 1970's by Kenner. However, it wasn't until the beginning 1980's when this toy line took a real foot hold on the toy world. This was the first toy line that would truly capitalize on licensing of a film property. The original toy lines ran from 1978 (though marketed in the holiday season of 1977) until 1985 and covered the entire original trilogy. In 1985 the line was discontinued by Kenner. The Star Wars line helped popularize the 3.75" action figure scale and was also one of the toy lines to help create the market for large vehicles. The styling of the original line lives on to this day, as Hasbro still releases figures in packaging modeled after the vintage card backs and Gentle Giant releases 12" versions of the original Kenner toy line. |
ohhh...2 heavyweights in this round
|
gotta go with the transformers!
|
Transformers - only because of the sense of completeness. SW had so many vehicles and characters we didn't see made until much later. TF had just about every character made into a figure - even if the figure was pretty lousy. Plus, inherently you get two figures for one with TFs. The quality and tie in with a daily cartoon really push TF over SW in the 80s.

Transformers
like perry said they were a vehicle plus a robot action figure what wasn't to like? also they are so popular Star Wars has crossed over and they make star war themed transformers case closed ;) |
The seeding in this tournament leaves much to be desired.

Anywho, TF's FTW! |
Transformers hands down.
Revolutionized action figures in the 80's and is still going strong. So many copycats and KO's to this day. Even McDonald's got in on the craze with products that transform in you happy meal. |
Transform and roll out!!!
|
The force is strong with Transformers.......
|
Honestly, it's really hard to pick which toy was better in the 80s. They both hold a special place for me. I may have to chicken out on this one. I mean you got AT-AT walkers and the Falcon, against Optimus Prime, seekers, and Megatron???
|
Transformers all the way! Even the name says it all...
|
TFs for me!
|
Star Wars is getting the beat shit out of them, lol........
|
This is a 1st round match up?

This is a hard one. Star Wars really was the first to make 3 3/4" into a viable and awesome scale.
On the other hand, has anything in the toy market for the past 40 years or so been as innovative as Transformers? I'm going Transformers on this one. Barely. This was a rough first round. |
Transformers was the much better toy. Star Wars had vehicles yes, but Transformers *were* vehicles. They beat Star Wars in play pattern, being two toys in one, they still had the war, better sculpting as well.
If you look at both objectively, and remove any connection to fiction from either, Star Wars really didn't have anything to stand on, aside form a few oddball aliens. They weren't great toys, if fiction didn't mean anything. Transformers as toys however, were a lot better than their fiction. |
Rough first round, indeed. Well, that's what happens when the odds aren't in your favor.
|
transfromers for me i had more transfromers than starwars i like transfroming them that was fun fro me
|
Yeesh... hard to say. Transformers were more innovative and unique, but Star Wars... well, it was STAR WARS. Bah.
|
Seems like this should be the final or semi-final round. Looks like Transformers all day/airy day. You get 2 toys in one, and they transformer into other shit...a gun, a frickin' gun!!
|
I did it once, I'll do it again.
I'll be reppin' the bots, cause Luke doesn't have anything on a large metal fist. Plus if I vote for transformers, I'm technically also voting for robotech! Go VF-1JETFIRE! |
talk about a landslide vote lol.
|
I thought for sure Star Wars would've put up more of a fight. lol
