Hot Toys vs MU/ML/MS

I've been contemplating making the jump from 6" and 3&3/4" Marvel figures into one 6th scale Hot Toys. The new figures Hot Toys are producing for the Avengers movie look amazing and I'm not sure I can resist much longer. I'm this close to selling my large MU collection off and focusing on the high end figures. What's your guys opinion?Anyone have Marvel Hot Toys figures? Are you guys mixing your collections?Or keeping them strictly MU/ML/MS?

FancyPants 05-10-2012 07:17 PM

I have the same thing man. I have a hard time thinkin about dropping 300+ on one single guy. I'm thinking about the 1989 batman jack nicolson joker figure though.

DogFashionDisco 05-10-2012 07:25 PM

Maybe just cherry pick one and see how it suits you? I have the Harvey Dent, Ledger Joker, and Batman they released and they are fucking spectacular, but that was where I drew the line because Hot Toys are truthfully too fucking expensive. Its much easier to drop $9 here and there on cool figures rather than investing $200-300 on just one.

M3T4L V1KING 05-10-2012 07:56 PM

Too damn expensive for my tastes. As cool as they are, I for one want a lot of characters, and I couldn't buy every character I ever wanted for Hot Toys.

Lokash 05-10-2012 08:05 PM

So, some quick math. I counted 123 marvel 3&3/4 inch figures in my cases currently which I figure I bought for a average of $8 dollars a piece which means I spent just shy of a G on these 123 figures alone. For me to buy 5 avengers hot toys I'm looking at a G easily and prob more than that.

Lokash 05-10-2012 08:10 PM

But when I compare my 20 3 & 3/4" Iron Men, which are all a portion of the perfect Representation of Iroman in figure form, to the Hot Toys Mark IV IM that one figures blows the 20 ok figures out of the water.

yourfacehere 05-10-2012 09:15 PM

I have a Wesker hot toys, and I've owned STARS Wesker, and LEon. They're quality, but you can't mess around with it too much, I mean, you can with a bunch of em' but they're meant more for display. I'd only get one or two at the most.

Not really worth it, except maybe if you've got a favorite...Then again Ironman and game of death Bruce Lee is amazing.

jmo 05-10-2012 10:45 PM

I'm with Mr potty-mouth...hot toys are too expensive but they sure do look great. I had to crow bar open my wallet to buy htz. 1st avenge movie cap and he is awesome. (They make the figs lo2ok even better with professional camera work) but he'a still amazing. Better off picking and choosing certain one's since they're so pricey. Personally I wouldn't give up mu and especially mls.

riot control 05-10-2012 11:19 PM

They are spendy that's for sure. I've got 3. DX-02 Batman, Joker, and Bank Robber Joker. I'll snag the Hulk when he gets released. Would love to pick up a Celtic Predator. I think the difference is that these are more works of art, statue quality, as opposed to smaller scale figs which are meant to take a beating. Or...maybe just call them dolls with better articulation! :D

FancyPants 05-10-2012 11:49 PM

It's an investment. I don't buy things to resell them, but god forbid Something happened and I needed money to pay a bill or bail somebody (myself) out of jail, i'd have the liquidity available.

behindthemask 05-11-2012 06:40 AM

I have the Mark III Battle Damaged Iron Man figure and love it! I will give you some advice and pointers. One is if you really like a figure buy it, because if you wait too long your going to have to deal with inflated pricing from Amazon, BBTS, and Ebay! Shipping on these figures can be an extra $40-100 depending on the figure you get as the boxes are large and then need to be shipped in a larger box to protect it. If you a MOC collector, these figures rock as they have double shadowbox windows that allow you to see the figure inside and the boxes are a work of art in themselves. Hot toys all in all is big $$ collectors sell the headsculpts from $40-200 and break down the figure and sell it off piece by piece, hell most boxes just the box are worth $50. I think they're great investment pieces. as look on ebay the pricing for the preadator figures or blade, it's like $600+! I think having one or two as a focal point of your collection is the way to go. I would love to have them all or a lot of a line but at $150-300 a figure it gets hard to accomplish that feat. I would suggest going online figure out which ones you want and shop around, often times you can find sellers from Hongkong who have auctions with free shipping and there's where the big savings is. I bookmarked a Hottoys Thor series Odin for like $180 shipped, good price, but if I get him then I will want to get Thor and Loki. Myself if I had the $$ would have every IronMan figure released including both war mahinces, black widow, nick fury, thor, cap, spidey, the new hulk and hawkeye, 300, blade, and a bunch more. I think to be a completist or multiple buyer you need to have a nice display case/room and lots of $$ to blow. As each piece is an investment.

Overall figures rock, price sucks. Quality and detail is there, but for the most part these are articulated statues, not meant to be "played with" as some of the pieces are thin plastic and can break easily. Buy what you like and you'll be happy, don't try to be a completist. I mysefl am selling a lot not all, but a lot of my MU, to help reinvest into my collection more key pieces. I hope to have a few more HotToys figures down the road, but I'm content with the 1 I got right now.

cellardoor 05-11-2012 08:08 AM

Don't get rid of toys you cherished or still like.
You will only regret that and there's nothing wrong with the other scales.

That said, Hot Toys are the definitive action figure collectable and the sheer quality of their products justify the cost. You'll forget how much you spent as you start to pick through the immaculately presented box and revel in the amount of craft involved in just the tiniest element of the figure.
I've got a First Avenger Cap which is my favourite toy, bar none, and will be the first and only thing i'll save in a house fire. I spent an hour just marvelling at the shield!

If you want a toy to represent something you love, like a comic or a movie, then you simply have to buy at least one Hot Toy figure. Get it done!

Lokash 05-11-2012 08:40 AM

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated. I decided to buy the special edition war machine as my first HT piece. As of rightnow I'm not selling off my smaller scale collections but I may trim the fat a little. For those of you who are on the fence about HT I'll let you know what my impressions are once I get the piece in hand.Once again thank you guys for your responses!

tlasjr 05-11-2012 08:58 AM

If you have the room for them and can afford them I say go for it. Personally the 1/18 scale works best for me. Aside from the fact I live in a one bedroom apt with a wife two cats and a dog I enjoy the hunt more than the kill usually. Translating the current budget to Hot Toys would mean 1 figure every 4-6 weeks. ....though I do have that inheritance coming....

Kind of but when I was selling off all my X-23 statues, it was kind of hard to move 2 of them just cause of the size and the economy currently. Although if I was patient I would have broken even on one of the...

Yup if you can afford and have the space for them!

I started getting all the X-23 statues and they were hot, but recently off loaded them:( for space and $ reason. But all good, at least 2 of them I was able to find a good home for them.

A lot of good advice in this post from behindthemask; just wanted to echo it.

The HT Iron Man stuff cemented my transition away from collecting Transformers. I started with the HT Mark I and from there have picked up every IM/WM they've produced. Can't emphasize enough the importance of buying it right away if you like it; especially any special editions associated with conventions or Japanese magazines.

Even though they're all pricey, the intervals between releases make it a bit easier to save your pennies in preparation. HT is a whole 'nother type of collecting--not better, just different.

Thanks for the praise and comments. I also like what you said.

If you have a weekly. biweekly or monthly budget depending on the amount simply set aside that for maybe a month or two longer then normal and you'll have enough for a Hot Toys figure. Example if a hot toys figure shipped is $200, that's like buying $18-19 MU figures. You get more buying cheaper figures in terms of overall quantity, but when it comes down to overall scale and quality, Hot toys is far superior. The only company that comes close on slightly cheaper buget is Marvel Icons, but even still trying to find yourself a spiderman or Hulk figure is going to cost you $100.

I really like it when collectors have mutliple scaled items, it shows presence, and the larger items draw more focus which is what you want. When you have large scale items only the impact isn't as dramatic or obvious. For MOC collectors Hot toys is a dream in terms of box art, and displaying options, but the boxes are huge and would take up a ton of space if you got a lot. Also anybody getting late in the game is better off getting new figures then old as the markup on the original figures ie IronMan Mark 1, Blade, Predators, Robocop, and all sorts of other figures are now double, tripple or more the original rate. If you thought paying $40-100 was bad for 1 MU, trying justifying $1000 for 1 hot toys figure. The one thing Hot toys does better then any other line at the moment though is maintain it's value and it's little time before the value spikes. A LCS around here bought 2 Hot Toys blade figures on an investment only, wouldn't sell them to me in the store, pissed me off. Turns out they paid like $500 for both shipped, and sold both for around $1700 shipped in less them 2-3 months from having them. As Hot Toys doesn't make many of the figures, not sold at major retailers. I wish they were all numbered runs to help with the rarity side, I can never tell how many they actually make of 1 particular figure.

Bowen figures are the same as well as the HT's.

I'm wondering how long it would take me to serve the £170 for a Hot Toys Avengers Cap.

At the rate I save, about 170 years. :(
