Man, I knew that ROC wasn't the best film but I didn't realize that there was that much vitriol against Sommers. I think he can do action films, he just had to work with a bad script (and arguably bad acting).
It seems as if he's garnered as much ire from Joe fans as Michael Bay has from Transformers fans. There's even some who would prefer Bay work on the sequel instead of Sommers, which I find hilarious considering Bay's a punchline over at TFW. Oh well. Here's hoping the new director for Joe 2 has better luck than Sommers.

I got behind GI Joe because I accepted it as a popcorn movie and didn't expect that much going into it. Thus, I enjoyed it.
As far as Sommers leaving the project, this could be a good place to start over. Usually I hate reboots. You made one bad movie, so what? Just make a good one next time (Star Trek works because they didn't just ignore what came before). In the case of GI Joe however, I would support a total reboot. It's not quite the "Joe Universe" that I imagined. Sure you need that element of sci-fi, but it seemed like a little much. Also let's figure out a way to get Cobra Commander a cool costume. And Sgt Slaughter as Sgt Slaughter. Nuff said. |

I think overall, Bay is a better director than Sommers, and I do perfer the TF movies to ROC. They lack depth for sure, but they did deliver on action, and special effects. Not that the films are without flaws, I just found myself more entertained by Bay's work than ROC. It's like Kickback said too, irregardless of what you think of the movies, Bay's movies obviously did something right looking at how much money they took in, and looking at how big it made the TF brand.
ROC did not do the same for GI Joe. I just found the whole discussion on Hisstank ironic and a little "grass is greener". Especially about how Bay would be better than Sommers, when I'm sure there are others on TFW who would have wanted the opposite. In fact, there's probably a few fans who STILL want Bay off DOTM.

I saw ROC and enjoyed a few things but overall it just didn't capture the spirit of GIJOE. I believe Transformers 1 and 2 did that very well. Sure there are some flaws, but no where near as bad as ROC. Bay pissed off a lot of fans, but entertained the public in general. ROC couldn't do the same. They should just do a reboot and forget the 1st film even existed. Wolverine 2 will do the same. Sometimes you just have to cut your loses and start over. They should go with the 1st GIJOE movie theme, Cobra is really a race of reptilians trying to take over the world. I think that would have more appeal to the public and fans.

I thought ROC was ok, a pretty decent action flick, but I am really not a fan of Channing Tatum. I think if they got someone better to play Duke I would have enjoyed it a lot better. I even thought Marlon Wayans was better. And since I don't see them replacing Tatum for the second movie, I'll probably just rent it.

Don't get me wrong. I quite enjoyed both TF films and ROC. They were fun, goofy movies and I never expected any of them to go beyond that. I also agree 100% with what Kicky said. For all its faults, TF07 was the best thing to happen to the brand ever and ROTF kept the ball rolling.
