Takara-Tomy have updated their website with a page for the next Masterpiece Transformer to be released, Masterpiece Smokescreen. Smokescreen, the 19th Masterpiece toy, will be released in Japan next month, and he is the third of the Datsun Fairlady Z trio along with the previously released Prowl and Streak (aka Bluestreak / Silverstreak). To whet your appetite for this next Masterpiece, check out the images on the page linked above!

A new third party group is coming on the scene. Named Firefair, they have unveiled their first two upgrades via Meteor Operation on Facebook. The first one is a fire effects set for Masterpiece Grimlock, consisting of fire breath / fire sword attachments, burning fist punch attachments and a crown of flames. The second is an upgrade for Hegamon to give him some alternate heads with different expressions, and to make him a little taller in scale with ToyWorld's Orion.

The latest edition of Dengeki Hobby magazine has been released in Japan, and among the news contained within its pages are the names of the Generations Mini-Con Assault Team. Known only as "Mini-Con Assault Team" in the US on the packaging, and by fans as "the Mini-Con three pack" or "Mini-Con Guy", it might interest you to know that for Japan the combined mode and the three Mini-Cons that make up the combination all have individual names. The combined form is known as Centuritron, with the helicopter being named Windsheer, the jet Runway and the tank Heavy Tread.
Please note these names are only for the Japanese market - the US might well get him under a different name altogether. In other news, the Transformers Go! redeco of Thundertron, Go Prime, is stated to be a toy-only character and will not appear in the direct-to-DVD animation for the series. And in something which may or may not be of interest, the new Transformers Cloud series is referred to in the magazine as Transformers Generations Cloud - suggesting this new exclusive series is a subset of the Generations line and not a complete stand alone. Many thanks to Snakas for the heads up on this news. |

TFC Toys have revealed the combined mode of their Ares not Predaking via a posting on ACToys. Ares is the third unlicensed Predaking to come to market, along with War Lord and Feral Rex. This is the first time we have seen all five of the TFC Toys Ares team fully assembled, albeit with some of them still in very early prototype stages, so this design might change by the time all is said and done. With that said, check out this new image.

Keith's Fantasy club have announced the next release in their EAVI Metal Phase 1 series, Surgeon. Surgeon is another reuse of the not-Perceptor design, although in this case, he is very much reworked with a new head and a very creepy new chestplate with legs reminiscent of the Transformer that inspired this design, Revenge of the Fallen Scalpel. Check out this crazy new release from Keith's Fantasy Club, which comes to you via Big Bad Toy Store.

As many of you are no doubt aware, next year is the 30th anniversary of Transformers, with May 8 2014 being the official date of the 30th anniversary. But did you know that a very important event which would shape Transformers as we know it took place 30 years ago this week?
The year was 1983. Hasbro had approached Marvel comics to write the backstories for a new toyline they were bringing to the US market - The Transformers. However, the initial names and bios written by Dennis O'Neil were rejected by Hasbro, leaving Marvel editor Jim Shooter to look to one of his other editors / writers. Jim Shooter ultimately asked Bob Budiansky to take up the task. Bob was given a very short timescale to provide names and bios to many of the initial 28 Transformers - a single week, with the deadline falling in Thanksgiving! But Bob Budiansky rose to the challenge, and through him many characters including Megatron were named and given the bios that have helped shape their personalities for the past 30 years. So in this week of Thanksgiving, I would invite you all to raise a glass to Bob Budiansky, who 30 years ago created much of the Transformers mythos as we know it. I would also invite you to celebrate the work of all the other creators since, who have taken on the task of writing and shaping the world of the Robots in Disguise and given us 30 years worth of toys, cartoons, comics and so much more. It all began in that week leading up to Thanksgiving, 1983. The true countdown to the 30th anniversary of Transformers begins here. |

Next up in our advance looks at the next assortment of Transformers Generations Deluxe class toys we have a look at Dreadwing! Dreadwing is the other redeco / remold in the third wave of Transformers Generations IDW Comics pack-ins. He is a redeco of the stealth bomber Megatron, done to homage the Generation 2 Dreadwing ATB (which was itself to have been redecoed as a version of Megatron, so there is a nice bit of parallelism there).
As a homage to a Generation 2 era toy, Dreadwing is bright and vibrant, though fortunately the gaudiest elements of Generation 2 have been toned down for this release. You've got a nice contrast of the dark blue armor on the vehicle mode, and the lighter blue on the limbs of the robot, with some clear red plastic on the eyes and the gun to break things up. Dreadwing works really well as a reuse of the Megatron mold, and is an excellent homage to the Generation 2 toy he is based on. The broad-shouldered feel of Megatron's mold lends itself to Dreadwing, whose toy was fairly substantial and bulky, and the new head helps to distance this toy from Megatron somewhat, although there is no escaping that this is a Megatron remold, particularly with that arm cannon (which can double up as a hand weapon, so there are display options to give Dreadwing more individuality). Overall Dreadwing is a very nice homage to the Generation 2 toy, and I have to praise Hasbro for going ahead and putting the Generation 2 Decepticon logo on the toy and on the packaging. The toy remains an excellent mold and the new head together with the vibrant deco breathes new life into the design. Very much recommended - and if the fact it is a Megatron redeco has put you off Dreadwing, I would invite you to look again. A straight-up redeco of Thundertron, this lion Prime sports a white, black and gold look, with some clear green on the forearms. He also comes equipped with a pair of crimson swords which were originally included with Kenzan.

The Transformers Collectors Club have tweeted a new image of their Figure Subscription Service Year 2 Treadshot with Catgut. Treadshot, a homage to the late Generation 1 Action Master of the same name, is a Warpath redeco. Catgut is a homage to the original Treadshot's partner Catgut, and is a reuse of the Arms Micron Jida, who originally came with the Japanese version of Terrorcon Cliffjumper.
The new image shows the Subscription Service Treadshot side by side with the original, giving a good sense of how much the new deco has been carefully tuned to make the Warpath mold look as close as it can to the original Treadshot. This fan thinks it is look pretty spot on, and cannot wait to get him in hand next year! |

Empire have added an article to their website with higher-res versions of the new Transformers Age of Extinction stills we saw earlier today. Their article also fills out some character names and fills in just a few more story details.
Of particular note, Mark Wahlberg's character is now named as Cade Yeager. Nicola Peltz is confirmed as Tessa Yeager, with Jack Reynor playing her secret racer boyfriend Shane (full name given as Shane Dyson in Yahoo's coverage of the same stills). Stanley Tucci is playing Joshua, and Sophia Myles is playing a geologist named Darcy. These names were all previously listed on a leaked call sheet, though the second names were not given at that time - this leads one to assume that some of the other details given might also be true. The cast is rounded out by Li Bingbing, who is described as (spoiler, highlight to read) "the CEO of the Chinese Transformers" and Kelsey Grammar as Harold Attinger, who is being called (spoiler again!) the film's non-robot big bad. The article also sheds new light on what the plot of the movie involves - this one is another spoiler, highlight the text below to read: Earth is scarred by the events of the past three movies, but is moving on after all the giant robots disappeared. Cade Yeager, an inventor, discovers a buried Transformer (we're guessing a fossilized Dinobot?) which sets the stage for the return of the rest of the Transformers The article ends with director Michael Bay's thoughts. He has a good feeling about this movie and says it has a huge soul. And he's not ruling out staying on to make more Transformers live action movies. "Well, it's a director's world... It's a franchise world at the moment," he says in the article. "You know, Peter Jackson is still in Middle-earth..." Click here to check out the full article, and keep it TFW for more Transformers movie news! |

Trent Troop, who previously worked with Hasbro and Botcon license holders Fun Publications, recently sat down with TFW's own Vangelus for a special WTF@TFW supplemental podcast to discuss Trent's latest venture BMOG - Bio-Mechanical Ordinance Gestalts - and the crowdsource process, the development process, and the horrible horrible duck idea process. Be sure to check out this special podcast right here to find out more about this line and the process that brings it from concept to reality.
But that's not all, because BMOG has unveiled their next set of potential releases, Featherblight and the Non-Dino Squad. Featherblight is a bird in a similar style to Ursenal, who breaks down into 5mm pegged weapons including scimitars, a shield, blasters, rocket boosters and a gatling barrel. The Non-Dino squad are made up of three prehistoric animals frequently mistaken for dinosaurs. The trio are standalone weapons and include such a Dimetroden axe! You can discuss these latest designs on our 2005 Boards here. |
