Since it was changed around wave 2 or 3 of Series 3, any subsequent release of figures from the first couple waves have the potential to get a gold shield release along with their original black shield release. But because that changeover occurred so long ago, I doubt there will be any more transitional variants (like with the Cap'n and Doc).
What transitional changes are thee on Capn'n and Doc?

Both Captain Marvel and Doc Samson have a middle variant in between the black and gold shield versions. It goes something like this:

black shield (original release) --> black shield/reversed card art (2nd, transitional) --> gold shield/reversed card art (3rd and final variant).

Shawn has an excellent MU checklist for just the variants, including packaging and other oddities.

Marvel Universe Variant Figure Checklist - Toy Discussion at Toyark.com

We also have a fairly busy thread just for discussing MU variants. IIRC, there should be pics or at least links to pics showing the Cap'n and Doc variants.

iLegends73, keep in mind that 'credible' differences are purely subjective. There are likely some collectors out there who care about those minor differences, even if it's just sticker placement.

I do know for certain that there are a VERY small handful of Marvel Universe Collectors who care about the Nick Fury/Archangel sticker inclusion. Some collectors remove the stickers, and some try to obtain 'original' figures with the sticker still applied.

In my opinion, the sticker can be removed and re-applied (though not easily), so I don't personally see it as a 'credible' difference, but again, it's very subjective from collector to collector.

The best I can tell, it was a conscious decision on the part of the Marvel Universe Hasbro team to change the first wave(s) of Series 3 to match the rest of the waves in that series. Originally, the first one or two waves were only released with the black shield, but the majority of the series was released with gold.

When they went back to change the shield, they must have wanted to revise the card art as well to make it align better with the rest of the series at the same time. Some card art was better aligned for the space, some was zoomed in and rotated, and some were kept as-is.

It's really kind-of silly to make these changes anyway. I get that you want to have some uniformity throughout the series, but who is it benefiting? Only MOC collectors would even really notice, and probably wouldn't even care. It's certainly not a 'how they look on the pegs together' thing, since Series 1, 2, and 4 are still coming out at the same time, and are all generally different, (with 4 being dramatically different).

Just think about the amount of work Hasbro put into these minor changes (and re-changes in the case of Doc and Captain), and how little difference they make. All that money spent on that project and they're too cheap to keep David Vonner attached.

Sorry, that's a bit of personal frustration there at the end.

It's possible that the change from Black to Gold was to correct an error due to miscommunication at the factory. Sometimes Hasbro can catch that kind of this early enough that it doesn't affect future production runs.

And that kind of scenario is the most basic form of running change. It's not done to create a variant or simply a new design choice. It's specifically to fix a mistake done by the factory that was never intended to be produced. And that's not the same as a factor error (which would include mismatched limbs, odd/missing paint apps, misassembled parts, wrong cardbacks, etc).

Awesome! I love nunchucks-down DD. One of my favorites because I didn't know it existed for SO long, and was so thrilled when I finally found one.

Scored a no pumpkin bomb hobgoblin from evil bay late last night. I am curious to know if there are other random packaging variants. Was tempted to do a bin on Victor Von Doom, but just couldnt justify it. Hopefully he becomes available soon.:s

Now you'll have to verify for us that the Hobgoblin with 'no bomb' just has the bomb positioned UNDER the Nick Fury mail away sticker. I believe that's the case for those.

Von Doom will pop up like gangbusters after SDCC this summer. Frankly, I'm very surprised they haven't offered it as the mail-away incentive yet...

Only one you might be missing is Union Jack

Never heard of the BP variation though. Not enough anyhow to consider it a variant as much as an error

I scored the weapons out Union Jack from the same seller who sold me the hobgoblin...had the weapons holstered one already.

I asked a question to one of the sellers selling a BP...all I asked was "Could you take a picture of the figure head on...the response was "He has white eyes if you were wondering" LOL Very savvy of the seller! LOL

meh, I'd still pass. He's not cheap to begin with so I don't plan on getting another one. With BP being like 99% painted black I could see how he could get a little in his eyes. I don't think I've ever seen it listed on any guide anywhere either
